There was a knock on my door and I hastily closed my laptop before laying out all of my notebooks to make it seem like I was up to nothing suspicious at all.  Alec then walked in just as I was picking up a few pencils to shove them into my bag.

"Not even prepared to go to school yet? Tsk, tsk, Sparrow." Alec looked at the mess of binders and textbooks on my bed. "Keep this up and I'll start to think you actually don't want to go to the academy."

"No," I gasped in a mockingly horrified voice. "What would make you think that?"

He laughed. "Logan's here, by the way. You better hurry up or your coffee will get cold."

Alec left the room after that, his feet heading out into the apartment. After I had stuffed everything into my school bag, I realized that it looked like I had packed a good enough amount of supplies to run away to Nova Scotia.

Grumbling, I dumped the books out and by then, my mind was replaying the conversation on Christmas day.

It had been two weeks since that gods-awful incident. The rest of the holidays had been spent with faux-happiness, all of us pretending that nothing had gone wrong. It exhausting to lie this much, to force myself to act like everything was wonderfully perfect. I hadn't had a good night's sleep since Christmas because I now spent hours awake in bed, waiting for someone to try and kill me.

It was no better when I returned to Paradise two nights ago. Even though my father had made sure that Paradise would be safe for me to return to, it wasn't the same as before. Now everyone was on edge. Every stranger on the streets was the enemy. Every unknown face had us clenching our fists to prepare for a fight.

Elijah had moved us from his house to the apartment above the coffee shop so someone would always have to go through Elijah before they got to me. Archer used the pull-out bed on the couch while Alec and I shared the second bedroom of the apartment so that I could keep a constant eye on him. His academy sweater lay on his bed, which had been made earlier this morning.

Sighing, I grabbed the correct notebooks and textbooks I needed and pushed them into my bag, took my favorite pens off the table, and headed out into the lounge. Alec was organizing a few papers on the small table by the kitchen while Logan stood by the coffee machine, pouring creamer into one of the cups.

"Morning," he greeted when I joined his side. He made a face when he glanced at my wig while he passed me a cup of coffee. "My hatred for that wig grows every time I see it."

"It's because you wear it better than him, Park," Alec snorted as he stuffed the papers into his bag. He was about to head out the door, and I hastily called out to him.

"I thought you were going to head to the academy with us?"

Alec stopped but he propped the door open with his foot. "Are you personally inviting me to third-wheel? I'm honored." His voice dripped sarcasm and I knew this was a ploy to get us off his back.

"It's not like it mattered to you before," Logan snorted. "You really want to take the bus by yourself, Darkwood? I'm not going to stop you but my car has this thing called heat and leather seats."

"If you put it that way..." Alec pretended to ponder for a moment, tapping his shoe against the floor. "Do I get shot gun?"

"If you're willing to hold my hand."
