In Ancient Greece there was supposed to be an Oracle in Delphi who contacted the gods and passed on messages and spoke prophesies and so on. She had this ritual she used where she drank from a spring and went into a kind of trance. The river which she drank from is on a divide between two tectonic plates under the earths surface (Google it if you don't understand), and there was release of gas into the spring. So the Oracle of Delphi would come into her temple and drink from this spring, where she would inhale this gas from the water, which would make her go into a trance and sprout out predictions for the future and messages from the gods to the people who visited her.
Basically, the Oracle of Delphi was high as a kite.
