In Ancient Greek mythology, there was a story about Zues kidnapping a women and taking her to an island called Crete. The woman was called Europa. Now Europa, couldn't get back to the mainland because she was on an island and Zues wasn't nice enough to take her back. Her family, back at home had no idea were she was so her name came to mean, "those lands we don't know much about" about fifty or so years later, the lands to the north came to be called nith-europa shortened to Europe.

By the way I'm pretty sure I got the names wrong but I'm doing this from memory and I can't find the place I got this from so if you know the correct terms, could you comment and say....thanks.
