They all sat in different chairs lining the sort of office Chris had set up. He had a desk on left side of the room where he sat in my father’s old leather chair. I guess he didn’t have the heart to get rid of it. He had a grim look on his face and his hair looked messy, a sweaty white mess. In a love chair right beside the desk sat Matt with a worried look on his face; he was always one to think way ahead of what was going on and most of the thoughts scared him. Along the right wall, straight across from Chris’s desk were two love chairs identical to the one Matt sat in, sat Turk and Jake.
Upon entering the room, Turk looked at me and immediately shot me an apologetic look but I wasn’t ready to give him a reassuring smile, not yet. Jake remained looking at the floor, his eyes filled with absolutely no emotion. I gripped Ryan’s hand like it was my life line as he led me over to the last chair in the room and motioned for me to sit down. I graciously took a seat and Ryan stood next to my chair just like he used to as Chris began.
“Okay we all understand the problem we have now but I’m going to address just in case we have some lagging.” He stood up and walked around his desk and walked to front and leaned against it crossing his arms. “Nate’s parents are still alive which means we need to find them as soon as possible before it might be…too late.” My eyes were on the verge of tearing up but Ryan squeezed my hand for reassurance. “We need to send out search parties for them but we can’t start that unless we have a lead.”
My head snapped over towards Jake looking at him with a sort of desperation. I needed him to tell them what the guy told him. He looked up and met my eyes and nodded slightly, his eyes full of an unspoken sadness. “I might have something…” Everyone’s head snapped toward him with looks of shock mixed in with confusion.
“What are you talking about?” He took a deep breath and looked at Chris with a new found confidence. “The man who told Natalie about her parents…he said something about them being where my parents met.” Chris’s face widened in shock and he stood up quickly, walking over to Jake in a fit of passion. “What did he say?!” Ryan walked over to me and stood in front of me protectively as if Jake would do something.
I looked around the room and saw that Matt was slightly behind Chris as backup for whatever reason and Turk was still in his chair, staring at his brother in complete shock. He looked around at us expecting answers and when we gave nothing, he stood up and walked in front of Chris who tried to push him out of the way with no luck. “What are you talking about?! We’re supposed to be brothers!”
Jake quickly got defensive and stood up, getting in Turk’s face. “Brothers are blood related; you are no more a brother to me than Chris is.” Tension quickly built up in the air and if it were different circumstances, I probably would’ve oohed or said burn! Chris stepped in between them putting a hand in front of them, ready to push both of them back. He face was deadly serious and fury was bubbling just behind his eyes. He had had enough of this just like all of us and it only just began.
“Look, we don’t exactly have time for your bullshit! Now shut up and get over it! He didn’t tell you and you didn’t tell him! It’s over, done!” Everyone silenced but Turk remained glaring at his brother, probably feeling betrayed but Jake had a right. They both had secrets and were both at fault. Chris turned his head toward Turk and gave him a warning look so Turk turned and returned to his seat while Jake silently stood there. Chris then turned back to Turk and took a deep breath. “Now, do you know anything about the night your parents met?”
Jake froze causing a tension to fall into the setting of the room. “I…my parents left me when I was born. They didn’t want me and Turk’s parents…took me in.” Chris slumped, knowing we were now at a dead end. “But I do know that my mother…she left me a journal. A journal that Turk’s mom kept a hold of because I wanted nothing to do with anything of hers.” Matt stepped out from behind Chris and said, “Well that’s simple. We’ll just go there, get the journal, research it and then we got our lead.”
“Not so simple.” All eyes snapped in Turk’s direction. “We may be gone and so may my parents but according to our system, our house is heavily guarded in the absence of the leaders.” I stood up and pushed Ryan out of the way, walking up to Turk and leaning his arm rests on the chair. “Well then it’s still simple. We can get you or Jake to go in and get it.”
“You honestly think they’re not gonna try something and get one of their guys to send out some alert that we’re there and then before we know it, we’re trapped.” I walked up to Ryan and got in his face; a strong habit of mine that comes out every time he counters my remarks. “Genius, we aren’t stupid enough to send them in alone. We have our ways and you out of all people should know that.” His eyes narrowed and a bit of his hair fell over his dark eyebrows. “Are you questioning my trust in this gang?”
“I don’t think the answer really matters but either way,” I turned back to Chris and Matt. “They’re not going in alone. I think we should pull out dad’s old strategies and we might be able to take over the place within minutes, get the journal and get out. Simple.” Chris thought for a split second then turned to Matt. Matt nodded slightly and Chris turned back to me. “Okay it’s set. I want you Nate to go with Ryan and I want Turk and Jake to go train while Matt and I figure this out.”
“What do you expect me and Ryan to do?” His eyes sparkled and he smirked. “I’m sure you’ll find something.” That little rat…
