Chapter 7
CONNER:
“Have we made it?” Sky asked me as we descended closer to the ground. I loved to look at the faces of amazement that Sky held on his face. He has stayed in the village pretty much all of his life and has never experienced anything like this before. This trip must seem so foreign to him.
“I guess we are,” I answered with a huge smile on my face. Sky’s face immediately lit up and as he is ready to explore new land. He turned and stared at the window and examined the landscape. It is much drier and more arid then back home and seemed too barren for my liking. I’ll defiantly miss climbing trees and hunting when staying here. At least I won’t feel too homesick when I’m busy working.
“Look, the mountains are so different than from home! The trees are different too! And the cacti…” He rambled on like a child typically does. I looked out the window and just stopped listening to him and looked for myself. I’ll have to admit it is pretty in its own way but it still doesn’t compare to home.
The plane finally came to a stop and we began to gather our things and get ready to get off. I felt my phone buzz in my pocket so I reached down to see what it was. It was very unusual for me to get a text message since I only have it on missions. I unlocked it opened it up to see if was from my father. When I opened the message I immediately noticed that it was in fact from my dad. It read: Conner, I have arranged for you to meet up with one of the other assassins that were assigned on your mission. His plane arrives in approximately 20 minutes after yours. Sorry for the late notice. When I first joined the brotherhood and went on my first long distance mission I bought him a phone so he wouldn’t need to worry about me being so far and not being in contact.
“Great, we have to meet up with another person,” I informed Sky with an irritated tone of voice. I just wanted to go to our place that were staying at and sleep. That long plane ride is finally catching up with me. We got off the plane and sat near a plane exiting area hoping that’s where we would find this mystery person. I sat down on a cushiony, leather couch and began to doze off for a bit.
ALTAIR:
“Have I seen you somewhere before somewhere?” This young, fairly attractive woman sitting near me asked. She looked at me and smiled flirtatiously. I could easily tell this woman has never truly seen me before and just wanted to talk.
“No, I’m afraid not,” I replied back giving her a fake little smile. I’m not one for much conversation with random people, but she just seemed bored. So I replied as nicely as possible and then went back to flipping through a magazine that was in the back of the seat in front of me. I wasn’t really reading the magazine but I used it to make me appear busy.
“Oh, well isn’t that a shame. So, how’s this flight been treating you? I’ve been kind of bored,” She admitted, looks like my guess was right. I let out a small, quiet laugh at her predictableness.
“I guess I could say the same,” I responded, I glanced down at my clock on my phone to reveal how much time I have on this flight. Since it’s not much time I might as well join in the conversation it wont hurt me. “Only about half an hour left, that’s not too bad.”
“Where are you headed too?” She politely asked with her eyes filled with hope of an honest answer and not trying to sound too nosy.
“Not sure quite where yet, can I ask the same about you?” I asked to further the conversation. She seems like a nice girl and she is pretty attractive so I’ll actually hold out this conversation for the little while on the plane to keep me entertained.
“I’m headed to Sierra Vista because I live there. I was just visiting family and now I’m flying home!”
“Well, I’m here for a job.”
“Military? Just a guess!”
“Well not exactly.”
“What is it then?” She asked while she batted her long eyelashes. That’s when I noticed that her eyes were blue which goes nice with her long curled brown hair.
“I can’t really explain, I guess you could say top secret,” I said putting air quotations around ‘top secret.’ Her smile grew even bigger at this. “What do you do?”
“I’m a medical researcher.”
“Please return to your seat and prepare for landing,” the intercom sounded and interrupted our conversation. I glanced out the window and the ground was coming into view as the minutes passed.
“Awe, we’re already landing and we were just getting to know each other. Not fair!” She announced. She just kept a look of disappointment on her face looking for a solution. Her eyes lit up suddenly then came up with an answer. “Let me see your phone.” She said and I gave it to her questioning if that was wise or not. She took it a programmed, I’m guessing, her number into it. “If you’re ever close to Sierra Vista give me a call or a text and I’ll show you around!”
“I’ll remember that,” I acknowledged her and smiled at her. She began to blush a little as she gathered her things. I looked down at my phone and seen her number and her name which I was never told, it’s Sophia. We exited the plane and we were bout to go our separate ways so I turned around and said, “Sophia it was really nice meeting you.”
“You too!” She said beaming me one last smile. “Wait I never caught your name.”
“It’s Altair,” I informed her. I took out my phone and texted her my name. “That’s how it’s spelled and now you also have my number.”
“Good to know,” she said as we both went our separate paths.
I was walking through the airport until I felt my phone vibrate and I pulled it out to see why. I had a short text saying: Look for another assassin named Conner –Master. What was that supposed to mean? I walked into a lobby of some sort and it was lined with different restaurants. I glanced around the place in search of someone with similar clothes or something that would give away another assassin.
CONNER:
The twenty minutes were finally up and I began to search the area for another assassin. I didn’t see anyone yet. Sky tapped me on the shoulder and I turned to him and he said, “Is that him? He’s dressed similar.” He pointed in the direction of a man with a strong build and didn’t look like he was from the United States. He had tanned skin, short black hair, and a serious face that seemed set in stone.
I walked towards him and tapped him on the shoulder, “Are you the one we are supposed to meet with?” I asked trying to sound as casual as possible. He looked me straight up and down and seemed to be thinking to himself for a little bit.
“Yes, I’m Altair,” he replied formally. I was almost starting to believe that he didn’t speak English.
“Connor,” I introduced myself and then motioned towards Sky, “and this is Sky. We should get going.”
We walked through the airport in awkward silence and it was beginning to bug me. Yet, I didn’t know what to say to break it either.
