Faey sat in her mother, Amara's lap watching the waves roll along the sand. Her brother and father fishing in its waters. Both her mothers and her own long red curls interlacing so she couldn't tell who's hair is who's any longer. Her mother hums a lullaby. She can still remember how her sweet voice sounded. As if the ocean itself had a voice. Faey pressed her bare feet into the chilled sand. Seagulls squawk in the distance. The air smelled of salt. All is right with the world. Faey closed her eyes and leaned back against her mother and into her warm torso.
"I love you mummy." Faey whispered softly.
"I love you more my sweet Faey." Amara whispers back. Faey opened her eyes to see Elijah, her older brother, running towards them. A smile across his freckled face.
"Faey! Come quickly! I've caught a fish!" He says excitedly. Reluctantly Faey left her mothers warm embrace and followed her brother to where their father was holding a catfish. Elijah's face filled with pride.
"We'll have to have this cooked up for supper." Faey's father, Clayton, said happily. Faey smiled and nodded her head. Her firey red curls bobbing. They went back over to Amara and Faey sat down in her lap again. Elijah sat on the sand and Clayton next to Amara. Clayton gave Amara a kiss and held her hand. Amara wrapped her free arm around Faey and planted a kiss on her head. Faey looked up into her mothers beautiful vibrant blue eyes. The same ones she shared, Amara said in a voice like a breeze.
"Happy birthday darling."
That was the last normal day of Faey's life. For the next day all hell broke loose.
The soldiers of the Farie kingdom invaded. They came to Faey's village and burned it to the ground. Many lives were lost, including Amara. When the demon soldiers came into Faey's home, raided it, destroyed it, rendered her father unconscious, it was her mother, Amara, who picked up her father's sword and defended her children until she was unable to fight any longer, and was killed before the eyes of her children. Damage to the village, their home and their family wasn't the only damage to occur, for that day, a seed of darkness was planted into the heart of young Faey, and she was never the same again.
