"That was the second time this week Miss Fabrell," Dr. Q comments unhappily. I fall back onto the pillow and sigh.
"Only two more days and you'll be out of here. It's okay to take a break once in a while." the doctor shuffles around, checking stuff.
"But I've got pterodactyls to train!" I frown at the pterodactyls on the ceiling. At this point, I've been in this room so many times they've customized it just for me.
"And they can wait. Besides, you have Ptero with you every second! He's such a good, loyal dog!"
For what felt like forever, I ate, slept, and breathed that room. The every few hour visits by Anessa and Leo were joyful, but what I always looked forward to was when Mitchell would sit next to my bed and we'd just talk. The doctors even brought in a couch because occasionally he'd fall asleep in the chair.
The very second I was allowed to leave the last day, I hopped in my jeep and drove to my pterodactyls. Mitchell luckily jumped in and made sure I didn't drive like a racer.
I pull up beside the pterodactyl dome and leap out, hitting the ground running. When I get in, out of breath with my hair tangled and Mitchell wheezing beside me, I see the dino doctors are about to take off Screech's splint that she had to get for her broken wing.
"Ocean? I'm surprised to see you here; aren't you supposed to be in the infirmary?" one asks.
"Nope. Just got out."
"Good! I suppose you would like to do this?" the doctor motions to Screech. I nod and walk up to her slowly.
There are restraints on her to hold her down but I remember I don't need to use them. I've trained them, they trust me.
"Hey girl. How ya feeling?" I ask, not expecting an answer but just to let her hear my voice. Screech chirps and I unbuckle the leather straps across her chest. She stands and shakes while I slowly reach up to release the splint. I see her eyeing me cautiously and I talk to her as I remove the bandages.
"There you go. Is that better?" I whisper softly to Screech as I slip it off. She flaps once or twice then takes off, wobbling a bit but making it to the pond over by the little foresty part.
I let out an earsplitting whistle and then Hedwig and Feather appear out of the trees.
"Hi guys! How was your break?" I smile when they coo at me, inching closer.
"Screech is all better now," I whisper. The two older ones start to argue, squawking at each other and flapping their wings. Hedwig finally wins and snaps at Feather just to be sure.
I laugh and leave them to get reacquainted with their sibling. I turn around and see Mitchell leaning on the rail, mouth open.
"You know if you hold that open long enough, you'll catch a fly or two," I state and he blushes.
"Can't help it, that was impressive! I wish I could do the same with my raptors but they're too feisty! Much like someone I know..." Mitchell trails off, leaving me to be the one speechless. He slides into the drivers seat and buckles up.
"You're not driving until I show you how to speed properly." Mitchell laughs and I roll my eyes while grinning.
"Okay fine," I mumble and we drive down the road which happens to still remain muddy.
We're moving along, happily listening to Fall Out Boy on the radio when it stops. The whole car stops as well and when we look out, all the lights have shut off. I hold up my radio and try to contact someone but it just comes up staticky.
As soon as it happened, everything flashes back on again perfectly normal again.
Remember me for centuries!
Fall Out Boy continues to play and Mitchell cautiously taps the gas pedal. The jeep moves forward a centimeter and he presses harder, causing the jeep to speed down the road.
"Okay, I think it's working!" I say and lean over grabbing the steering wheel before we drive off the cliff.
Mitchell begins to drive normally and we head for the control room.
"Lowery what happened?" we all demand. He looks like he wants to shrink down and out of sight.
"Uhh, well the er program short-circuited and the power went out for a few seconds," he explains. Claire nods.
"We understand that but why did it happen?" she urges him to move along.
"Dunno. It was probably just a break in the system," Lowery shrugs.
"Or... Someone could've hijacked the power," I add quietly. Everyone turns to me.
"We'll have to be more careful though, because without power gates are shut down and with shut down gates, it becomes World Massacre Dino!" Mitchell sees my uneasiness with having all eyes on me so he steps in to take the attention away.
"Especially with our good old friend, Triminus!" Leo puts an arm around my shoulder. I shrug him off laughing nervously and Claire looks over a clipboard.
"Owen, how is Mitchell doing with the raptors?" she asks her husband.
"Pretty good from what I've seen. What do you think son?" Owen pats Mitchell on the back.
"Oh well, Red let me touch him," he's suddenly interested in his converse.
"Great, you're doing great!" Owen grins while Anessa and Leo snicker in the background.
"Let's check the perimeter fences. I'll be in the plains, you guys can split up and get elsewhere." Claire walks away, Owen trailing behind her.
"Come on Ocean, we'll look at the raptor paddock." Mitchell reaches out to take my hand then stops and pulls back, embarrassed.
We're going along the bumpy road and then I realize this isn't the way to the raptors. Mitchell's driving for the Triminus habitat.
"Mitchell, don't you dare-" I'm cut off when he races for the building after we park. I'm forced to run after him, Ptero on my heels.
"Mitchell!" I shout at him when he slips through the door.
"I have to Ocean, it's my destiny I can feel it!" he yells back and I put on a burst of speed, following his loud footsteps through the pure white corridors. We reach the little control room that looks into the habitat and I collapse on the floor, catching my breath for a moment.
Mitchell helps me up and guides me to the glass. He looks around, through the tropical trees and sees nothing. Tapping on the glass, I stare out the window. Then I remember not seeing one specific thing when we drove up.
A wall.
