I looked around. There were... things everywhere. Their faces were gray and dark like something had sucked the life out of them. Actually something had sucked the life out of them. Their cheeks and eye sockets were almost the exact shade of a pitch black sky and looked as if they were pressed into their skulls. As I looked around something caught my eye. It was a man that looked about three years older than me, with black smoke circling around him. He looked a lot better than the other demons around him and looked awfully familiar. He turned his head towards me, allowing me to see his whole face. The man looked a lot like... Fergus. I rub my eyes, hoping that I was just hallucinating. But even after blinking a few times and pinching my arm he's still there. Then, he starts walking towards me with a huge grin on his face and even a few tears lingering on his cheeks. It actually was Fergus. How could he possibly be a demon? Last time I checked it was only me who tripped and fell, not him. I stood up and headed towards him.
When I finally get close enough to him to clearly see his face a series of tears rapidly fall from his eyes "Kendra you're here" He whispers before wrapping me into a bear hug "I thought I'd never see you again." I hugged him back, feeling a wave of relief and happiness rush through my body. At least I wouldn't have to be a demon alone.
I let go of him and he wiped a few tears off of his cheek "H-h-how did you get here? You didn't die." I asked him.
He nodded "Actually, I did. Your mom blamed your death on me and stabbed me to death with a steak knife before I could get away."
My jaw dropped. My mother killed him? Now I felt like crying. I blinked away a few tears that were ready to fall off of my eyelashes. But I didn't want him to see me cry because he was upset enough already so I just forced a fake laugh to escape my lips "At least we can be demons together now."
He nodded and smiled, pointing to one of the uglier demons "I don't look like that, do I?" I shook my head and laughed "Good. And fortunately you don't look like that either."
I giggled and took his hand "Well we can't just stand here forever. Want to head out?" He nodded and started to pull me towards a road across the plain. I trailed behind him with my hand in his "Where are we going anyways?"
Fergus pointed over to a bright light "Another demon told me we enter the real world through there. Then we'll discover what our job as a demon is going to be. Jobs depend on your age and cause of death. You could haunt, kill, deal, do nothing, etcetera."
I nodded "Never knew that being a demon would be so complicated."
He laughed and then started running towards the light. "Come on! I want to find out what my job is!" He exclaimed eagerly.
I sighed, slowly trailing behind him "You're 32 years old, you shouldn't be this excited to get a job."
He continued to run towards the light "Come on! It'll be fun! We get to pick a person to possess and look like, too. Or we could just take our dead bodies if it's not too late. Doesn't that sound cool? I think I'll use my old one. I'm more used to looking like I do. What about you?"
I sighed "I think I'll take my older one too."
He grinned "Good choice." He stopped when he was a foot away from the entrance to the real world and stared at the light "It's bright."
I laughed "Well of course it is. It's the entrance to the universe."
He turned his head to me "True. So who's going first?"
I stood beside him "We could both go in at the same time." I took his hand and he nodded.
"At the count of 3. 1..."
I took a deep breath "2..."
"3." And he pulled me into the start of my afterlife.
