Francesca began to open her eyes; eveything was a blur. She could make out a faint shape of a person; but it was hard to see in the dim lighting of the room. She blinked a few times; her vision clearing.
First she noticed the green uniform of an officer. Then the tokens on the uniform. Her eyes landed on the face of the person sitting beside her, looking down apon her. It was Eric. Her green eyes grew wide; she wanted to scream but couldn't; she wanted to get up and run away but couldn't. She was stuck lying on an infermory mattress, unable to move or speak.
"Ah, your up." Eric said sounding cheery. "By the reaction you just gave me, I would say that you have just realized that you are paralized, and that I was the last person you expected to be at your bedside." He said cooly. Francesca couldn't believe what he had told her; she couldn't be paralized. Her eyes flashed with confusion and fear.
Eric looking down at her noticed this and spoke, practicly reading her mind. "Oh and don't worry about the paralization it is mediclly induced so that you wont rip your stiches out of your back. I also had them mute you with another drug so that you wouldn't scream when you woke up." He is dispicable. Francesca thought.
"Well since you are awake I figuered I would tell you all about Oz." Eric said. And so he bagan to tell her about what life was like before the war. It was peaceful, kind, and wonderous. That is until Elphaba retured to Oz and changed it forever. She and another leader in the Oz community set out to rid the land of all half-bred beings in Oz. Soldiers were drafted and encouraged to join the Atrox party and to spred the word of purity throughout the land.
Eric stopped and staired out the window; looking out apon the camp, and to the distant towers of the emerald city. "I bet you are wondering how I joined the party." He said bringing his focus back to Francesca lying in her bed. "It started about two years ago when the party began with only about one-hundred members. My father was one of the very first to join the party. I was seventeen at the time; just two weeks before my eighttenth birthday. My father came to me, and said it was time for me to be a man ,and to change the world. He told me to join the party or be disowned by everyone that I loved. I was scared, and my biggest fear was to be alone. So I made my decision. The night before I joined the party I snuck my half Fairie girl friend over. We slept together; it was the most magical thing I had ever felt before. The next morning after I came back from the draft office, my father made me walk with him to my girl friends house. He walked inside handed her parents a peice of paper. He walked into my girl friend Keeli's room. He dragged her out into the street and through her onto her hands and knees. He tour open the back of her sunflower dress. She was crying histerically; she was confused and scared. He handed me a whip from his belt and told me to hit her." Eric's voice broke. He was trying to hold back the water in his eyes.
"I told him I woundn't hit her, he took the whip back and hit her once. She cried out in pain. I said stop, on what charges is she being punished for? My father replied adultery, she spred her legs and entraped you. She is a whore who will pay for her crimes.
He hit her again, and again, and again. I stood there frozen in fear and shock. They carted Keeli off; they washed the blood off of the street and continued on with their lives. My father came up to me and looked me dead in the eyes. He said son, don't ever denie and order again. And don't you ever feel sorry for these people; they are curs and that is it. It is our job to make the world pure again, and that is what we plan on doing." Eric said stairing out the window again. "When ever I see Keeli's parents it kills me, her mother looks at me like I am a monster, and her father looks at me with pitty in his eyes. We both knew I wanted nothing to do with Keeli's beating."Francesca was in horror over what she had heard. How can someone be so crule as to beat someone blindly in the streets for being human? "It is late, I will be back tommorrow morning after role call to check on you." He said. Eric rose from his seat on the cornor of her bed and left the room closing the door behind himself.
Shortly after Eric had left a nurse in a white and green pin-stripped uniform came in, she walked over to Francesca and injected something into her arm. At first a seering pain shot up her arm, but it was quickly followed by a wave of soothing calmness. Francesca could feel her eyelids becoming heavy with sleep. Quickly she fell into a soundless deep sleep. The next morning Eric came into Francesca's room at the end of role call. He moved a chair that sat in the cornor of the room. It now sat beside her. Eric lowered him self into the chair and looked down at her still sleeping figure. She was beautiful, with her long pale blonde hair cascading across the pillow. Her fair creamy skin, her plush pink lips. She didn't belong here in this hell hole. She belonged somewhere magical, and to someone who could make her life magical aswell.
He continued to watch her sleep; her small chest rising and falling with each breath.
Around nine-am Francesca awoke; fluttering her long lashes to wick away the feeling of sleep in her eyes. "I thought you would never wake up." Eric said in a slight joking tone. "Role call ended over three hours ago." He said.
One of the pin-striped nurses came into the room offering coffee. Eric took a coffee off of the tray she was carring; waving her off with his hand. He took a sip of the weak black coffee; turning his attention back onto Francesca. "I had one of the nurses cancle the mute drug, so now you are free to talk. But I warn you if you start screaming at me or anyone else, I will inject you myself." He said. Francesca knodded her head, and looked Eric straight in the eyes. "Why are you here, why do you keep coming here?" She said her voice sounding raspy. "I am here to make sure that you are okay. And I keep coming here because for some reason I am drawn to you." He said calmly.
"What, why?" Francesca said looking at him in disbeleaf. "As you know I hate my job; I can't stand to see people suffer. I pitty you, I know that you are not from here. And I intend to find out how you got here." Eric said.
"I don't know how I got here!" Francesca said almost shouting. "Are you crazy! Keep your voice down! Out there they can kill you just for looking at them the wrong way." Eric said raising his own voice. He pointing at the window across the room. "Who pulled me down during inspection?!" Francesca hissed. "I did." He said lowing his voice. "Why?" Francesca asked. "I did it because I couldn't stand your screams of aggony anymore." Eric cut in. Tears began to roll down Francesca's cheeks. "I don't want to die here." She said in between sobbs.Eric stood up from his seat; Francesca looked up at him, tears runing down her cheeks. He shook his head at her, and proceeded to walk out of the room. Leaving her there to cry alone.
A nurse walked into the room and grabed the suringe laying on the bedside table, that Eric forgot. She quickly uncapped it and injected it into the side on Francesca's neck. A burning, numbing feeling began. Within seconds Francesca was mute, so her sobbs could not be heard. She was left alone again by the nurse. Tear stains were left on her face as a mark of abandonment in this world.Soon exausted Francesca fell asleep again; this time she thought; she would wake up alone with no one who cared.
