The Great Hall erupted in noise. The Slytherins traipsed out, followed by the younger students who clung to one another, stumbling over the ends of their robes. The older years remained seated, nervously fingering well-worn wands, watching the rest of the school leave - not quietly - hoping they would live to tell the tale of what awaited them.
"We have to protect the school" Professor McGonagall said to the remaining students. Several adults had joined them, each ready to fight to protect Hogwarts from Voldemort and the Death Eaters. As Professor Snape had fallen out the window of the Great Hall moments before, it fell to Professor McGonagall to delegate roles.
Sixth-year Ebony Blake, sat halfway down the Ravenclaw table with her friends, Luna and Ginny. Ebony had spent the last few weeks living in the Room of Requirement, so a change of scenery and her friends company was most welcome. Professor McGonagall instructed the three sixth-years to wait in the Great Hall, away from the main battle as Ginny was not yet of age, so technically not meant to still be in the school.
The hall became silent as everyone left. Ebony dimmed the light so they could peer out the window into the darkness. Luna stuck her head out the gap in the window made by Snape, her blonde hair blowing in the gentle wind.
"I can see them" said Luna, pointing into the distance.
"Where?" asked Ginny, following Luna's finger.
"There!" insisted Luna. "Oh look those two just ran into our barrier!"
"And came to a rather sticky end!" said Ebony, grimacing.
The three watched as the Death Eaters cast spells onto the barrier, breaking holes and catching the falling sections on the tips of their wands, smiling triumphantly. It took them minutes to collapse the protection enough for them to pass into the grounds. They were greeted by a shower of spells from Hogwarts. The Death Eaters' own spells were wild and flew in all directions.
"Duck!" yelled Ginny, watching one jet of green light speeding straight towards them.
Ebony and Luna flung themselves towards the stone floor. The spell hit the doors on the opposite wall, splintering them into a thousand pieces. Breathing heavily, the three girls leant against the wall under the window, nervous to look out again.
From outside the Great Hall, they could hear cries and yells from both sides. Flashes of light in all colours whizzed by, and the sound of crumbling walls echoed around the empty hall.
"Get to the door!" cried Ebony, as a large battling group moved into the hall. Hogwarts looked like it was losing that particular battle.
Wands out, the girls raced across, firing accurate and powerful curses. The Great Hall was filling up as more and more people tried to take shelter from the raging battle.
Ebony was fighting a large Death Eater who was bleeding heavily from one eye. Now, no longer able to control his left side, his aim was getting wilder and wilder. He slipped in his own pool of blood, continued firing, missed, hit the ceiling and Ebony knew no more.
