After the Battle of the Corridor of Elders, Ninjago returned to a time of peace. Meanwhile, the ninja took on small missions. As Wu talked about retirement for himself. He even bought a little tea shop he spent weeks brainstorming name ideas for the business.
Although Misty was skeptical about whether Wu was going to retire or not. He said that if the business took off, then all the ninjas would get a share of the business.
Misty couldn't help but notice after Sensei Garmadon sacrificed himself. There was something strange in the air that she couldn't quite place. She knew Sensei Wu noticed it too, but seemed to be doing his best to ignore it. Such as if she were outside at night. The wind seemed to tug at her hair and brush against her face more. It would whip around the walls of the small shop and the bounty at night. Sometimes so strong that it would rattle the hull of the ship. Almost as if something was trying to get inside.
She tried talking to Wu about it, but he would brush her off and simply tell her it was the windy season in Ninjago.
She witnessed a moment when Wu hung up the sign for his shop. He had finally decided on the name Steep Wisdom. It had a cute little teapot with steam billowing out of it. The Wind blew it down within only minutes. She found the pieces of the broken sign on the ground. A few pieces survived, but most were in splinters. She picked up the larger of the pieces and brought it into the shop. As Wu was stocking some of the tea he had just bought.
Wu looked up and saw Misty. Her purple eyes were narrowed, and she eyed him suspiciously as she held the pieces of the sign up, raising her eyebrow. "Are we going to talk about it?"
"It's just the wind, Misty. Not everything is something," Wu replied calmly, and he took the pieces from her without so much as a glance.
"It's not nothing," She scowled and walked off to find Lloyd with a huff. Lloyd was lying on his bed reading a comic book. A picture of him and his father was on his nightstand. She opened the door to his room, still in a sour mood. "It's not nothing!" She repeated bitterly under her breath.
Lloyd placed his comic book down. "So what happened now?"
"Nothing," She muttered, walking over and flopping onto the bed, lying beside him. She stared at the ceiling and couldn't help but sulk a little.
"Sure, nothing," he admitted sarcastically.
"Fine... I think Wu's hiding something. He's always been secretive. Even when I was growing up under his care,"
"Such as?"
"The bedroom I had in the monastery, you know, the one the snakes burned down... I found small written messages on the walls inside my closet..." They didn't match Wu's handwriting either. When I asked him about it. He shut me down quickly and told me not to poke into things that I shouldn't. The next day, the messages were painted over..."
Lloyd's nose scrunched up as his brow furrowed, "I thought you were Wu's first pupil. Why would there be written messages on the wall before you?"
"Exactly!" She shouted and sat up.
"Maybe he was trying to protect you?"
"I don't know, something just doesn't feel right," She noticed Lloyd reach over and pick up the framed photo of his father. He stared at it wistfully. He, for all that was considered, was taking his father's decision very well. Although it was clear in many quiet moments, he missed his father.
It was clear, though, that he was doing his best to remain strong in the eyes of the others. Misty had never been the best at comforting others. Living most of her formative years with only Wu for company. She didn't know the best way to let Lloyd know he wasn't alone in his feelings. Eventually, she gently nudged his shoulder with hers and said, "He's proud of you, you know."
Lloyd jumped slightly and quickly put the portrait down, almost as if it had burned him. "Yeah, yeah, I guess you're right,"
"You know it's okay to be a little upset at him... even if he was doing it for the better of Ninjago. It's normal, it's a part of the grief."
He was silent for a second, and Misty could see Lloyd processing what she had said and honestly probably processing so much more than that.
"It's not selfish? I wouldn't be being selfish to be even a little upset?" He finally said slowly and quietly.
"If selfish, you mean human... no. Your father is a hero, but he's still your dad; it's normal to want him to be here with you, for being a little upset he can't, even if you understand why."
Lloyd fell back onto his bed and let out a sigh, "I... I get he had to, but I miss him, and I just got him back," His voice cracked and wavered at the end.
Misty lay down beside him and gently squeezed his hand in hers. "I know, I'm sorry."
Lloyd was silent, and he continued to stare at his ceiling, no doubt wanting more than anything for there to be answers to why his father had to go away. Together they lay there in silence. Misty gently squeezed Lloyd's hand, reassuring him, a silent I'll be with you and you're not alone.
