Disclaimer: The Mortal Instruments and the Infernal Devices all belong to Cassandra Clare. This is a fanfiction and I don't own the characters.
The demon exploded in guts and ichor and Will Herondale cursed as he jerked his arm back. The ichor had already started to eat away at his dagger and Will hissed as it burnt his fingers.
Grinning widely at his new victory, he spun around and called, "Jem, did you see that? Killed it with one blow!"
But when Will scanned the dark alleyway for his parabati, all he found was walls dripping with vile smelling liquids and muddy puddles on the ground. Frowning, Will thought back to the violent struggle with the Shax demon, but he seemed to remember that Jem was behind him the whole time.
Walking out of the alley, Will squinted under the dim light of the lamp, and even the flickering flame was bright compared to the grim shadows covering the dark battle scene. He stared at the murky black water of the Thames River and scowled in annoyance. Bragging to Jem wasn't nearly as fun when there was no Jem to brag to.
He carefully searched in every direction, alleyway, and dark corner that he saw, but Jem remained out at sight.
"Jem! Jamisen Carstairs! Where are you, you disloyal bastard?"
Will wasn't very worried. There was not a shadow of doubt that Jem couldn't handle herself as she had continuously proved she was by far capable. In fact, if it wasn't for her illness, she would have been one of the most lethal and dangerous Shadowhunter's that he knew.
But there was always that small seed of uncertainty in the pit of his stomach. Jem didn't know this part of town very well- unlike Will. And that was only because he often wandered the bars and shady places of London searching for trouble and people with morals lower than dirt on the ground. And this place was a perfect description of London's not-so-legal side.
Shivering shadows melted into the darkness and almost blue limbs could be seen under threadbare blankets. Shouts and crashes were heard and there were plenty of Downworlders wandering on the streets, throwing him toothy grins as he passed. Opium dens dotted the streets with the sweet scent of drugs floating through the smoke clouded air. It was getting very dark, the time where things got very nasty easily.
And so Will urged himself to find Jem as fast as possible.
"Jem! Jem!" He shouted walking past an abandoned warehouse with boarded up windows, and that was where he heard the faint reply that echoed towards him.
"I'm over here, follow the witch light."
As Will walked closer to to the warehouse, he noticed the girl standing under the lamppost that glowed dimly revealing her face.
Her hair was tied up in a slightly messy bun- from the Shax demon- and it glowed brightly in the darkness. Her strange coloured silver hair drew attention to them and her pale complexion seemed even whiter than usual. Her face was fine-boned and delicate, with her slightly curving eyes being the only clue her heritage.
Will squinted at the black Shadowhunter gear she was wearing, and it was hard to see on top of the dark fabric, but still definitely there.
Blooded stained her shirt and covered her fingerless gloves, deep in under her fingernails.
"You're bleeding, what happened?" Will asked anxiously and his shoulders tensed.
"It's not my blood," Jem waved the question off and gestured for Will to follow her into the warehouse, "Good job on the Shax demon by the way, I heard your voice from here." Her footsteps were light and almost silent as they walked into the old warehouse.
Will was about to reply, but his words faded away when he saw the corpse of a little girl, about fourteen, pink ribbons tied in her hair, lying on the ground.
"We were too late." Will grimaced as he muttered a few profanities under his breath.
"Let it out William, I can handle a few of your curse words, you know."
Will then proceeded to swear at much volume and velocity as Jem patiently waited for his cursing spree to end.
"Did you find the weapon?" Will asked Jem as he scanned the death scene calmer than he had been a few moments ago.
"It was this dagger," Jem replied as she passed Will a glinting, sharp blade with a ourobouros- a double one inlaid carefully on the hilt. "What do you think it means?" she asked leaning in closer to take a closer look.
"The end of the world," Will said with a smile on his face, "and the beginning."
"I understand the symbology William," Jem said frowning, " I meant what does it mean about who did it."
"This is a alchemical sign which usually means foolish mundanes meddling in magic and ridiculous events that they don't understand." Will muttered.
Jem looked pained as she said, "The ones that usually end up being turned into a bloody corpse inside a pentagon while summoning a demon."
Tucking the dagger into his belt without commenting, Will spun on his heel and proceeded to exit the dark building. Jem followed close behind as she searched Will's determined face curiously.
"Do you think I'll be able to lead this investigation?" Will smiled strangely as he stared down at the dagger.
Jem sighed, as she guessed at the future. The headaches Charlotte with get from the Clave.
"Do what you want William, you always do anyways."
A.N. Hi! This was an idea that popped into my head and I decided to try it out. Sorry if I made the characters a little OOC, just tell me it you find any mistakes and I'll try my best to fix them. This fanfic will probably be Jem- based because.... He's my favourite character and totally awesome.
