It's a normal day in the Ealdor, as the young boy Merlin wakes up by the sound of people chattering and passing by. Everyone in the village is already up and working on the land. Merlin stretches his arms and yawns. What time could it be, he wonders.
Just as he moves to stand up, his mother comes in. She looks tired, her eyes heavy. This is due the lack of sleep she's getting because she's constantly worrying about Merlin. The worries have raddled her. It is not that Merlin is a boy who behaves so bad that he is likely to get into trouble. It is him not being able to control his powers that endanger him so much. Magic is not banned in Cendred's kingdom but with magic so powerful as Merlin's he'll never be safe...
