The world outside of the general store was dark.

With night having begun to fall just a couple of minutes ago, I could still make out an orange sunset glow through the windows.

Letting a sigh escape my lips, I locked up the last cash register in the store.

Heidi had left thirty minutes ago, desperate to make it to a party she'd been invited to. And, being the awesome older sister that I am, I said I'd cover the remaining hours for her. Now I was left all alone.

Jingling the store keys in my hand, I slowly made my way over to the front door, taking in the store one last time. Reaching for the door handle, I was just about to grasp it-when a pounding on the window grabbed my attention.

Whipping my head up, I stared in shock at what stood outside.

Opening the door, I hesitantly closed it behind me, coming face to face with a breathless Brett.

Standing with his hands in his pockets and his baseball cap slightly askew, Brett gave me a sheepish grin.

"Hey."

"Uh, hi." I forced a slight smile. "Do you need something?"

Brett removed a hand from his pockets and adjusted his hat, looking down at the ground for a brief moment.

His bottom lip twitched. "I know we don't know each other at all, but..." He began slowly. "I have a favor to ask."

What favor could he possibly ask for? We don't know each other. Unless...

"You're not going to ask if you can rob the store, are you? Because I don't think I can help you there." I crossed my arms and leaned against the door, wrapping my fist tighter around the keys. "Much less condone it."

Brett blinked a couple times. "Excuse me?"

I said nothing, knowing perfectly well that he'd heard me. Looking at him expectantly, I waited as Brett let out an aggrivated hum.

"Just hear me out first, OK?" I nodded in agreement.

"There's this girl.."

Ah. He must want me to help him get together with her.

"Who is absolutely gorgeous."

Uh huh.

"I.." he faltered. "But I think she's interested in someone who isn't me."

He finally raised his eyes to fully meet mine. I was struck; those eyes. He probably didn't even realize it, but any girl would follow those eyes to the ends of the earth.

"I need your help in making her jealous."

Whoomp there it is.

I frowned, arms tightening across my chest. "Why should I?" I questioned.
