The word "boyfriend" floated in the air like a spark, threatening to ignite everything around it. For several long moments, the only sound in the room was Mew's quiet, sincere declaration and the rustle of bedsheets as his mother lay frozen, eyes darting between her son and Gulf.
Gulf, not used to such confrontations, shifted uncomfortably, offering a small, respectful bow. Mew smiled brightly, trying to lighten the tension. "Mom, I'm sorry for dropping this on you. I wanted you to meet him properly, not like this—but Gulf is someone I love. I want you to know him."
His mother's hand trembled against the blanket. She tried to muster a smile, but it wavered, not quite reaching her eyes. "Mew..." Her voice faltered, caught between surprise and something deeper—apprehension, perhaps, or even fear. Only now did Mew notice the sheen of sweat on her brow and the way her hand clutched at the sheet. Behind him, he could feel his father's cold, steely glare, filling the space with tension so thick it made breathing hard.
Chills ran up his mother's spine. She knew too well the look in her husband's eyes. Still, she forced herself to pat Mew's hand, voice trembling. "Mew, we can...talk about this later. I...need to rest now." She lay back, pulling the blanket up over her shoulders as if it could shield her from the storm looming in the house.
Mew lingered, confusion and a flicker of hurt flickering across his face. "Are you—are you not happy that I'm in love?" he whispered, searching her face for any glimmer of approval. She only mustered a shaky smile and squeezed his hand. "Later, darling. Please."
Something in the room closed then—a shutter brought down by fear.
Only Gulf's gentle touch brought Mew back to himself, breaking the spell. Gulf gave a meaningful glance toward the door; Mew took the hint. Hand-in-hand, they left the room, nerves jangling. As they made their way toward the front door, Mew's father blocked their exit, arms folded, expression hard.
"Dinner," he commanded. "Mew, you'll stay."
But barely pausing, Mew shook his head. "No, Dad. Not tonight." With Gulf's hand in his, he stepped past his father, out into the night.
In the car, as soon as the doors closed, Gulf let out a slow breath, gripping the steering wheel with more force than necessary. The silence stretched—tense, electric—until Gulf spoke, voice low and frustrated, "What were you thinking, coming out like that? In front of them, all at once?"
Mew didn't answer right away. He stared at his hands, the sting of his mother's disappointment and the icy memory of his father's glare settling heavily in his chest.
Gulf started the car and pulled away from the house, the silence lingering. They drove in silence until they reached Mew's place. Gulf shifted the car into park and asked quietly, "We're here. Are you going to get out?"
Mew didn't move. He stared straight ahead, then turned to Gulf, his big eyes pleading and a little lost. "I know it was abrupt. But I don't want to disgrace what we have by lying. I wanted my mom to know you—not as a secret, but as the person I love. I want her to see who really matters to me. And...I want you to feel how serious I am. I want you in every part of my life."
The honesty there made Gulf's frustration soften. Something tender flickered between them. Heart pounding, Gulf reached over and pressed a soft kiss to Mew's lips, letting it say what words alone couldn't.
"It might get hard, you know," Gulf murmured. "Family, parents, secrets..."
Mew smiled, shy but resolute. "I know. But I want to face it—with you."
For the first time that night, the fear didn't seem so heavy. And under the soft glow of the car's dashboard, Mew and Gulf found, if not all the answers, at least the courage to take the next step together.
