NURRAIN
I stood there, my hand on my waist and the other holding on to the phone I am using to communicate to a robber.
Currently standing in front of a crowd, more security personnel than civilians. Some group of criminals are robbing a bank and unfortunately, they happen to hold people as hostages inside the bank.
As the negotiator, I have to give my all into saving those inside. The FBI requested my presence.
"If you could release these people, I promise there won't be guns." I said through the phone. This have been going on for hours and I am really getting tired of it.
The psychological knowledge of manipulation, trying to see if I could use the details from the robber's personal life. Luckily I got his name earlier.
Patrick Williams
27yo
Male
5'11
Lives together with his single mother, abandoned by his father at birth.
Waiter at ALL FAST FOODS, Dartsmouth, Devon.
His details flash through the screen in front of me. I pinched my nose, trying to calm down the anger building in me. It's been hours, several hours of doing the same shiiii. The FBI are already questioning my intelligence.
"You wouldn't want to be the cause of your mother's misery do you? Patrick Williams?" I almost shouted through the telephone. Eyes fixed of the other screen connected to the Cameras inside the bank. I could see the panic on his face, how he turned around.
I smiled. Sometimes you just need to do things the roughy way.
"Melia Williams, 52 yo, works as a church cleaner..." I proceeded with the latest information displayed on the screen.
"Am I right?" I asked sitting down on the seat in front of the screen.
"Don't you dare..." his voice came through, filled with empty threats. He shot at the camera, the only one we are using.
I sigh. I wanted to go in there and fill his brain with bullets.
"I will..."
Gunshots....
All attention diverted to the banks entrance direction.
The doors opened, the robber holding onto a woman pointing a gun at her head.
"If you dare touch my mother, I will blow her heads up." His voice filled with soo much venom. I walked slowly towards the entrance and stood. I signaled some officers to distract him while I walk towards the back, slowly and carefully so he wouldn't notice.
A minute...soo close then I jumped on him and he shot the gun...silence then an eerie sound. I watched as the woman ran towards the crowd, I watched the robber's hands being cuffed and dragged away by the officers then.....an ambulance team before my head couldn't comprehend it anymore. Darkness engulfed me, painful one.
******************************
I woke up on a hospital bed, my hands connected to two intravenous tubes leading to the hangers standing above me.
"Nurrain." A voice said, soo familiar. I squeezed my eyes to adjust to the light. It was Sameera, smiling weakly at me. I could see from her eyes how exhausted she is.
"Nora." It came from my throat, coarse and rough. I had to clear my voice. She was laying on a hospital bed also, right next to me. I stretched my hands reaching out for hers and she did the same only that tears were in her eyes.
My mind couldn't comprehend what happened and why she is here.
"You are Alive." She muttered, smiling and letting the tears fall freely.
I smiled back.
Just then, a doctor came in with two nurses walking right behind him.
"Hello Mr Nurrain. I can see you are up ." He said smiling warmly while the nurses proceeded to check the machines and the IVs.
He asked how I was feeling, and a lot of questions followed then moved to Sameera.
"How are you feeling Mrs Nurrain." The doctor asked smiling warmly at her. I tried to look at her, to make her look at me but she avoided my gaze.
"Much better doctor, thank you." She smiled back. I watched as he asked her almost the same series of questions he asked me.
She answered without looking at me.
He then turned to me.
"Mr Nurrain, I can say you know how lucky you are to have such an amazing wife." He started. I didn't argue, just smiled.
"You were unconscious when you got here, the bullet shot right through your liver and that induced 70% damage. Your chances of survival were little and getting you on the transplant list ...as you might know is not easy. Luckily we got in contact with her." He turned to Sameera smiling.
"Her liver matched yours and signed the consent form. Both surgeries were successful.
Being a couple made you one but you see...you now have a part of her in you...love her dearly." He informed.
Dumb...numb...all the things I am feeling. I thanked him.
"I can attain to being the most successful man on earth. My wife..." I turned to look at her but she averted her gaze almost immediately.
"My wife is a rare gem."
"We all can say Mr Nurrain, we all can say." The doctor joked and the nurses laughed alongside us.
"Recovery should not take long. Both surgeries were successful. You both are healing rather too quickly if i may say. If things continue to go this way, we shall discharge her in a week and you in three." He informed and checked his wrist watch.
"Okay Lovers, we should be on our way. Heal soon."
"Thank you Doctor." I said and watch him walk out.
"Nora..." I said staring at her. I hate that I can't move my body the way I want.
"I am sorry Nurrain. I just had to tell them I am your wife to ease the hospital process." She started explaining.
I couldn't stop my heart from beating fast, rhyming with every language that speaks Sameera.
"I don't mind that Nora...you can say that whenever you feel the need to . Please please don't apologize for that." I pleaded smiling lightly.
"I was scared... I really was." She said with her voice cracking. I wish I can go and scoop her into my arms right now.
"I am sorry I put you in that condition, I really am." I said sincerely.
"Don't ever do that again...don't ever risk your life like that." She scolded.
"I won't My Nora, For you, I won't." I said facing her, our eyes locked and never wanting to be peeled off.
"I love you Nurrain." She whispered. I can tell she didn't want to say it out loud but she did anyway.
I have been dreading this for a while...the heart is such a stupid organ.
I didn't respond. I watched her closed her eyes in embarrassment.
"I am sorry." She said.
"It's fine. I should probably sleep now." I replied trying to end the conversation.
"Yeah yeah. I should too."
And like that, we both turned and faced the other direction.
I closed my eyes. I hate myself right now.
Instead of thanking her, I embarrassed her and made everything awkward.
My eyes open and darted to the table beside my bed. There, my phone lies facing down.
"Maleeka." My heart throbbed against my rib cage, threatening to burst open. I reached for it and turned it on.
"I am scared, please call me."
Her text popped on my screen along several others. I hugged the phone close to my chest and tighten my eyes.
Several missed calls from her two numbers.
I texted back.
"I can't talk right now, I am fine and I love you so much."
I find my fingers typing.
WHAT ON EARTH IS WRONG WITH ME? NOT WANTING TO CALL MALEEKA IN THE PRESENCE OF SAMEERA?
