Emily POV
Sam was on the phone in the kitchen to one of his suppliers. I was just sitting down on the couch for a quick flick through of the news when I heard some knocking around outside. As I was reading an article on anti ageing skin cream, Maddie came bursting in through the door giggling and trying hard not attract my attention.
"What is it Maddie?" I asked as I flicked the paper over. Not much else on other than women moaning about how age 30 was the worst age to be and that they wished that they were 21 again.
"James and Emma are..." Maddie started before collapsing into giggles again. I had pretty much started to guess what they were doing in the barns so early in the morning but didn't really want to bring it up. We had had those conversations a long time ago and neither of us needed to go there again.
"Well, they're kissing!" Maddie giggled as she told. Just as she said that I started giggling too.
"Madeline, don't tell her anything!" James yelled as he ran into the living room spreading dirt and grain everywhere. His face was turning into a tomato shade of red and as soon as he saw me his expression turned from anger to sheepishness. He seemed to be completely embarrassed at being discovered to be kissing Emma.
"We were just moving the grain around and James accidentally bumped into me and Maddie walked in on that exact moment." Emma spoke as she appeared behind James. I didn't believe her for a second. James doesn't act as if he has just been caught stealing sweets if he bumped into her by accident. I raised my eyebrows at her. We both knew that she had lied.
"If you say so Emma." I responded before going back to my newspaper to laugh at women.
James and Emma went back out to the barn to lift grain no doubt as Maddie went to her room to get a book. We were just settling down to read when there was a couple of sharp raps against the door.
"Hey, Emily, can you get that? Just trying to sort out some new supplies for the ranch." Sam yelled as I crossed the threshold to the large door. I pulled it open to see some of the Canadian Police on the other side.
"Are you Emily Brown-Worth, mother to James Brown-Worth and Madeline Brown-Worth?" The first one asked me. The blood in my body turned to ice and I felt my throat close up. How did they find me? How can they know that we are here? I nodded feeling it pointless to lie without getting anybody else in trouble. There was only one ranch around here.
"You will need to come with us as well as your son and daughter for deportation back to England. There has been quite a search party out looking for you." The second policeman said as he made to walk inside. They knew about Maddie. I tried to draw a breath into my lungs. Despite the hot summer air, the air felt cold inside by lungs.
"My son is away at the moment." I started to lie unsure of where it came from. If I could pretend that he was out then maybe I could buy some time for me to think up a better plan. "He may not return for some time." I continued.
"Well, we are on a deadline here so might as well just take Mrs Brown-Worth and Madeline and one of us can wait for the boy to get back." One of the policemen said to the other in an undertone as if he hoped I couldn't hear.
"We can't wait that much longer for them so should just take them now. The woman from England got quite bitchy at me and threatened to have my job." The other one muttered to his mate. "Mrs Brown-Worth. We can't afford to wait for your son so if you wouldn't mind fetching your daughter as well as Mr Holme so we can interview back at the station. Mr Holme will need to be questioned and you and Madeline will return to the UK." The policemen took my arms and led me outside. One of them disappeared inside and returned a few minutes later with Maddie. Sam followed them outside looking bewildered until he saw the look on my face and understood. Over the radio I heard that they were going to do a full scale search of the ranch. I only hoped that James and Emma had had the sense to disappear.
We were taken into the police car and I had handcuffs clipped onto my wrists as a precaution the officer told me. We were driven quickly to the police station which barely consisted of two huts. I was led to the first one. I turned around expecting to see Maddie following but she was being led to the second.
"Wait, we have to go back for Maddie. She is too young to be arrested. She has to stay with me. Please! Let me go back for her!" I started to yell at the officer. Maddie across the parking lot began to cry as she realized we were being separated. I started trying to fight against the policemen growing more and more desperate as Maddie was dragged inside the second hut.
"Don't make this harder for yourself Mrs Brown-Worth." The officer replied curtly to my desperate pleas. I could feel the tears starting to drip down my face as I was marched into a holding cell. He took my handcuffs off as I was now in a cell. The reality of my predicament was just sinking in. I only hoped that they wouldn't find James.
