Chapter 2- Jael
I was born on the winter solstice. I was given the name Adanathir meaning beautiful star, for the night I was born was clear and the stars bright, and fire, for my flaming red hair. My family leaved deep in the forests of South America. We were all very close in our little village, and if a stranger showed up we were very suspicious. I was taught magic at a very young age, even before I learned to walk. I was trained in combat. By the time I was nine I could combat some of the best fighters in the village and hold my ground. Healing and survival magics I learned first, as every elven child does. It saved my life when I got lost a few times. What else should I tell you... Well, I was betrayed by my friend Shakile who led a group of criminals to our secret village who then proceeded to burn and kill everything and everyone they came across. They even killed him. I was the only survivor. It was a miracle they didn't find me. I was practicing my concealment spells when the raid started. I smelled the smoke coming from where the village was and ran to hide. My master found me on the streets in Greentown and gave me a life again. Well, that's my cheery story... My hobbies include: stargazing, people watching, reading, and singing in the shower. Oh yeah, and I'm a 19 year old elven assassin.I was called into my masters office late tonight. Well, I say office but it definitely had a more "lair" feel to it. I knocked on the door to let her know I'm here, as I always do, and waited.
"Come in," I heard her raspy voice say. I entered silently through the double mahogany doors into the darkness of the cool cave. My master prefers the dark and has never been seen. Not by anyone still living anyway. "Ah, you have my box. Good,"she says distractedly. "Was the late doctor any trouble?"
I kneel and hold out the box. "No, m'lady. No trouble at all." I smirk a bit. It was an easier task than most of the work I get. Simple instructions. Catch the carriage, get the box, kill doctor Smyth.
"What do you know about this boy?" She asks me, pointing to a live feed of a human boy about my age on the MagikSkreen. He looked familiar.
"Nothing m'lady."
With a sigh she explains,"His name is Damien Speid. He works in one of our offices running errands and things. Recently, it has come to our attention that he's the head of the anti-Governments group called the Underground. He's leading a rally for their cause tonight at the club warehouse. I want his voice silenced. Bring him to me."
Without another word, I got up, turned , and silent as a panther walked out, leaving her to stare at the wall of MagikSkreens.I climbed the stairs to the rooftop. Time for some recon. I would go and watch him speak. I ran across the roof with feather-light feet and leapt into the open air, landing lightly on the next roof over. Don't be noticed, I remind myself. Everyone else was told I was dead, which is an advantage for an assassin. On the minus side I can never look for anyone from before the raid. Ever. The first rule the master made for me. The second was that I needed a new name, I choose Jael. The Avenging Wolf. I was no longer the scared little girl that ran from her village at eleven. I was the ghost of a nightmare to enemies of my master. My full title is Jael, Assassin of the Western Stars. But my code name is Omega. The Last. As in, the last thing my enemies see. Adanathir is gone now, but Jael is still very much alive.
I leapt over the roof tops to the edge of town, where the warehouse was and found a position where I could see Damien already speaking. Something about the Governments being tyranny and all that. I'm not usually attracted to humans but I would be lying if I said he wasn't cute, even if he was a but screwy in the head. I took out my binocs for a better look. His dirty blonde hair was a wavy mess and his blue eyes practically glowed with passion as he spoke. He really believed in what he was saying. Or he's a really good actor, I thought bitterly. Then I realized why he looked familiar. He was the boy that saw me. The invisible girl. Interesting, I pondered. Focus! I scolded myself in my head. You are here to gather information to get the job done most effectively. You owe your life to the master. Do not disappoint her. I watched and listened to the rest of the speeches, though none of them were delivered as passionately as Damien's. When it was over, I stayed to study him some more. His habits, his ticks, what makes him work. It was interesting. I found out he plays with his hair and pendant when he's bored, he uses his hands to talk and that he can take down and pack up equipment in less than a minute. He's done this before, I make a mental note. Everyone has left but him. Now would be the perfect time to take him, but I need to watch him more, and make a plan of attack. He turns out the lights inside the now-abandoned building and locks the doors behind him. He glances around to see if anyone was watching. Oh, Damien, I thought. If you only knew. He took his headphones out and puts them on. I could hear the faint sounds of late 10's hard rock coming from his music. He headed south, to his house, I assumed. I pulled out my time sphere to check the time. 2:17am. I should go to bed, I think. Lots of things to do tomorrow. I smile at the thought and leap down from the building opposite the warehouse. I roll onto the cobble streets. The half moon glows in the sky. it's really beautiful tonight, I think as I snap my fingers twice to make my blanket appear and unroll under the rusty, ancient fire escape. It's a magic blanket, it's always the right temperature, shrinks or grows to my needs, and conceals me while I sleep. It's very handy. I got it as a birthday gift from myself, as the master doesn't believe in such folly. I look once more to Polaris, before drifting off to sleep under the comfort of my wonderful blanket.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
