It was late when I go back. Like, 2am. I was too tired from the long hard day to even check the time sphere. I set my alarm and promptly passed out on the couch.
I wake up toe the harsh BEEP BEEP BEEP of the alarm going off. "So... Tired..." I grumble and sit up to find wherever I set it down last night. Somehow I find it on the enchanted refrigeration box. *sigh* Well, time for another day at my "glorious" job. Mrs.Busbey won't be happy if I'm late. I eat my breakfast of NutriBread with apricot jam, change into that torture device most people call a suit and head out the door to another day at the offices.
As I walk, I think about last night's events. We gained even more support for the Underground. About two hundred people came. When we first stated the Underground, many people were afraid of the rumors they heard about us, that we were raicals that were going to tear the Earth apart. It's taken a while for people t stop fearing. Almost three years, in fact. I walk down the same cracked remnants of the concrete sidewalk, to the same old brick building, upo the same three old warped flights of stairs, to my same thankless job at exactly 7:45am. Oh, why do I have to be so bloody predictable? Mrs.Busbey was waiting for me with a huge stack of paperwork to be filed, five requests for coffee, and a million other errands to run. I almost groaned when I saw her standing there at my desk with it all. I'd been hoping for a quiet day around here, so I could maybe get away with a little cat nap. This would day would be anything but easy. If I had only known how true that would be. My first task was to get Mr.Dommers bunion medication, easy enough, if a bit gross. My second one was to get coffee for a committee meeting happening in an hour. That being the case, I hightailed it over to the market coffee shop. I pushed through the regular crowds to the Bean Sack. Best coffee shop in Greentown and everyone knows it, apparently. The line into the shop was insanely long. That's when I saw her again. The mysterious redheaded girl. She was in the book section again. She made eye contact this time. I forced myself not to blink, because I knew if I did she would disappear. She started to walk away so I did the only logical thing to do. I followed her. She winded through the crowds as easily as if she was passing right through the people. I followed her as close as I dared. At first it was down the main streets, winding around in no particular direction. Then she turned abruptly dowen a darkened alley. No turning back, I figured as I carefully picked my way after her. A second or two after I thought that, she disappeared. I walked slowly to the spot I'd last seen her, hoping for some clue as to where she had gone. I knelt to look at the ground. Just normal cobble. I examined the wall in front of me. Solid. That was my last realization before something hard hit the back of my head, and everything went black. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
