The Ghost of the Lake

Chapter 14

I opened my eyes. Nelly's car had gone off the road and settled on the grass. What had happened? I looked around. Nelly looked unconscious; she didn't look that bad. Leo was moving his head. He had a large scratch on his forehead.

I undo my seatbelt and open my door. I get out and open Nelly's side of the door. I undo her seatbelt and try to drag her out. She is too heavy, so instead I drag Leo out of the car. He is half conscious.

"Leo, put your arm around me," I instruct him.

"Ugh..." is all he says.

I half carry half drag him away from the car and lay him down on the ground.

"Opal...are you...okay?" he mumbles.

"Yeah I'm fine. Don't worry about me. Just stay here okay."

"Mhm..."

I go over to the car and try to get Nelly out again. I put her arm around me and drag her on the ground next to Leo.

Leo had opened his eyes all the way. He tries to stand up, but I tell him, "Stay down. I'll call an ambulance."

"Let me help you," he says.

"No stay here." I make my way back to the car. Then I remember that Nelly hadn't brought her phone with her. I had also forgotten my phone. I go back to where Leo and Nelly are at. I remember that Leo had his phone with him.

I lean close to him so he can hear me without sitting up, and say, "Leo, do you have your phone with you?"

"Ugh... What?"

"Your phone. Do you have it with you?"

"Yeah...uh...actually I do." He hands me his phone and I start to dial 911.

"911 what's your emergency?" the operator says.

"Hello, um, please send an ambulance. The accident is located on Second Street. A car has skidded off the road. There are two people who might be in the need of medical help."

"Alright Miss. Help is on the way."

"Okay thank you."

I use the phone one more time to call Reu.

"Hello?" he asked as he answered the phone.

"Hey Reu. Well...um...we got hit by a car," I say a bit nonchalantly.

"What?! How did it happen?"

"Well we were driving down the road and suddenly we got hit."

"Is everyone okay?"

"Um...well Nelly is unconscious, and Leo has a big scratch on his forehead. I called for an ambulance. Its on its way."

"Okay. Stay where you are. I'm on my way."

"Okay see yah."

"Alright bye."

I hang up and walk over to Leo and Nelly and wait for the ambulance to arrive. I sit down and lose consciousness for a while. When I awoke, my head felt as if it would explode. I stood up and immediately saw stars on the corners of my eyes.

I was trying to walk in a straight line when the ambulance finally arrived. Two men in red uniform came out. "Miss is everyone ok?" one of them asked.

"I don't know. My mother is unconscious, and my friend has a scratch on his forehead," I respond lightheaded.

"Okay well you don't look good either. We'll check your mom and your friend first though. Is that okay with you?"
