How long had you known The Beatles? You hoped God was keeping some kind of score, because you'd given up a long time ago. You'd stumbled out of dodgy backstreet clubs, through the bombed-out streets of Hamburg, in and out of stranger's front doors, all with those ridiculous boys.

And how long had you known John? Oh, even God didn't want to know. Since your birth, essentially. As babies, you'd shared cots. As kids, you'd shared imaginary games and half-created dreams. As teenagers, you'd shared angst-ridden arguments and quiet, awkward hugs.

Even at the lowest points of John's life, you were beside him. There was always a seat at your dining table for him. And when you needed a friendly face and cheering company, his door was wide open. You had a key to his house. He was like your older brother.
