"So you're telling me-- us-- that you're in a boy band?"

Niall nodded.

"A world famous boy band?"

"Pretty much," Niall said, reaching for yet another slice of cold pizza from the box on the coffee table. He was about to take a bite when I snatched it. "Hey!" he cried out. I took a bite and winked at him while Kasey started up again.

"But what are the odds of that?! You've been AWOL for four fucking years, and it turns out you've been touring the fucking world with your famous fucking band!" She threw her hands into the air in frustration and looked over at us.

Niall sat comfortably at one end of the couch, as if he belonged there. I was stretched across the rest of the couch, my back against the armrest and my feet lying softly on Niall's lap. He was eying my stolen slice of pizza. I ate another bite then directed my stare at my best friend.

"I agree, it's pretty damn unlikely--"

"That's what I'm saying! I just don--"

"BUT," I continued, talking over her. "When have we ever allowed trivial things like probability define us?"

She grinned, "Never."

"Never," I agreed.

Here's the thing about mine and Kasey's friendship, it was totally unexpected. We were polar opposites. We met in eighth grade when I moved to the little town of Abbottsford, Wisconsin. Looking back, moving into that little white house on Claire Street was one of the best things to ever happen to me...

**FLASHBACK**

I was awkward and extremely shy. I didn't have any friends and was terrible at making them.

Kasey, on the other hand, was friendly and totally outgoing. She was the most-liked girl at Abby Middle School.

And she was my new next door neighbor.

I heard all about her at eighth grade orientation earlier that week. She seemed really nice, but just because she's nice, doesn't mean she'll want to be your friend.

So, there I was, sitting under the big oak tree in front of my house reading a book, when she walked right up to me and sat down to my left.

"Hi, I'm Kasey. You're Caitlyn, right? I saw you at orientation and I loved your top, but when I went over to you to tell you, you disappeared," she spoke with so much enthusiasm, I didn't know wether to completely question her sanity.

I looked up from my book, "Well, I don't really know anyone, so I just got my schedule and left." She gave me a peculiar look and I shrugged, turning back to my book.

"But that's exactly why you should have stayed at orientation, so you can meet everyone."

This time I didn't look up. "I'm not really good at making new friends."

"Well, I'm going to be your first friend here in Abbottsford, and your best friend. Okay?"

She was so blunt, and I wasn't in any position to turn down a friend, so I bookmarked my page and looked at my bubbly new neighbor. "Okay."

~

We spent the rest of that day getting to know each other, and it turned out we had practically everything in common. Including our class schedules.

She gave me the down-low on all the people and brought me out of my shell...

**END FLASHBACK**

I was snapped out of my reverie by Kasey throwing a peperoni at my face.

"Welcome back, Princess! So, where was I? Oh yeah--" she was cut off by her phone. She checked it the screen, "It's Matt, be right back!" She got up, answering her phone as she walked to her bedroom. "Hey babe! No, I was just hanging out with Cait and--" She closed her bedroom door and like that, we were cut off.

I looked back to Niall, who was staring at me again. "Why are you staring at me?" I asked, nudging him in the knee with my foot.

"I just can't believe it. You're right here with me. God, I've missed you, Caitlyn," he said taking my hands and leaning in closer to me.

I blushed, but instead of shying away, I felt compelled to I lean in too. "I feel the same way."

He touched my cheek tentatively and stared into my eyes. I stared back and had the feeling of falling endlessly into a sea of blue.

Our faces were inches away when Niall's phone started buzzing in his pocket. He closed his eyes and sighed, a little crease forming between his eyebrows. I smiled, took his face in my hands and kissed him lightly on the tip of his nose. I pulled away to see him giving me a peculiar look. I changed position on the couch so I was cuddled into his side.

"You should probably answer that," I mumbled into his collarbone.

"No," he said tersely. "I told them I wanted one day off, no interruptions." He took a deep, calming breath, then spoke in a low, rumbling tone. "Today," he said, wrapping his other arm around me and squeezing me tightly, "Today is for me and you. Or at least that's what they agreed to..."

I pondered over who "they" were for a minute before realizing that I didn't care. "Well that was pretty damn stupid," I mumbled into his chest. I wrapped my arms around his torso and squeezed, taking in his delicious scent. "Because there is no way in hell I'm giving you back." I lifted my head to look him in the eye, "Okay?"

He smirked and kissed my forehead. Before he pulled away he whispered, "I promise, they will never separate us again." He pulled away and I snuggled right back into his chest.

And we stayed like that for a while. Cuddled up on my couch, completely comfortable together, not a care in the world.
