"Moving?" Cassidy exclaimed when her mother, Rachel Roberts, explained to her that her father had gotten a job in California. "We can't move! I am starting my junior year of highschool!" Cassidy protested, "All of my friends are here in Mississippi! I can't leave them!"
"Baby, I know it's hard, but your father got a great job in Northern California. We found a house by a lake, I thought you might like that." Her mother spoke softly to Cassidy, as not to upset her any more than she already was.
Cassidy looked up at her mother, angry tears streaming down her cheeks, "People always seem to say that, 'I know it's hard'," Cassidy said in a mocking tone, "But sometimes people don't want hard, they just want their dads to stay in the same city so they can finish highschool with their best friends!"
Rachel lets out an exasperated sigh, Teenagers, they can be so dramatic. But wasn't this how I acted when I moved?
"I'm sorry, sweetie, but your father already said he would take the job." Rachel put a reasuring hand on her daughter's back.
"Don't touch me! Just leave me alone!" Cassidy screamed.
"Okay. Dinner will be at 6:30, so if you aren't down there I will bring some food up to you."
As soon as the door shut, Cassidy flung herself onto her bed, facedown. It's so unfair. I can't believe my parents are making me do this! Cassidy screamed internally.
A buzz from her phone broke off her train of thought, it was a call from her best friend Angela. What will Angela say when she finds out I'm moving? Cassidy thought internally.
She pressed the green accept button on her iphone, "Hey Angela," Cassidy answered melancholicly.
"Uh oh. What's wrong. That's your 'I trying to pretend to be okay but I'm really not voice.'" Angela's voice rang out in the silence of her room.
Cassidy chuckled without emotion, "You know me so well."
"Cass, seriously. What's wrong?"
Cassidy sighed, "Well...my dad got a new job in Northern California and," she took a deep breath,"we have to move."
"What?" Cassidy's best friend Angela's voice rang out,"What were your parents thinking? You can't leave!"
"I know."she sighed,"I wish they would understand that, but they just don't. We leave in 2 weeks."
"That's ridiculous! I will miss you so much!"
"I will too. I wish I could stay. I'm afraid I won't be able to make any new friends and everyone will laugh at me."Cassidy complained.
"You will have to call me everyday to keep me updated on how everything is going."Angela insisted.
"I will. I'm going to sulk in my room by myself some more I will talk to you tomorrow. Bye."
"Ok," Angela said worriedly,"call me if you need to talk to some one. The time doesn't matter."
That brought a faint smile to Cassidy's face,"Thanks, talk to you later."
"Bye."Angela said. Then the line clicked off.
Cassidy sighed, so much was being thrown on her, she couldn't handle it. She thought she might snap.
"Cass?"a voice sounded from downstairs,"dinner's ready!" It was her father.
"I just want to sit in my room and sulk! I don't want to have to have human contact at the moment!"Cass yelled back her reply.
There were muffled voices from the kitchen and then footsteps. Her door was cracked and a plate of food was set on the small table by the doorway by her mother. She then left without a word.
Cassidy stared at the plate, meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. The meal would have once made her pretty happy because it brought back good memories. But today, the food looked bland and colorless. With a sigh, she turned back to her bed and fell asleep to the muffled voices of her parents downstairs.
