Emily shot her mom and disapproving look from across the dinner table, where the trio sat eating dinner quietly. The dinner was calm, but Emily still had yet to fully process today, and needed some alone time to think. Picking at her pasta, she couldn't help but to let her mind wander around. The toxic scenarios kept replaying over and over in her head, making her heart hurt.
"So, what did you guys do at school today?"
Snapping out of her thoughts, Emily stared at Jane, but didn't answer, her line of sight falling back down towards her dinner plate after a moment.
Jake shot Emily a slightly panicked look, only to find she had once again been lost in thought. A few tense moments passed which felt like forever. Jake chuckled nervously.
"Nothing much, just waiting for the winter formal to come,"
Shooting another glance over to Emily, Jane and Jake both stared at the young girl waiting for her to respond. Jake nudged her as she looked up to see two sets of eyes on her.
"What?"
"What did you do today at school, honey?" Jane questioned, sweetly.
Emily coughed, and took a sip of her water, pointedly ignoring Jake's and Jake's half concern half amused stares.
"Oh, nothing much, I was thinking about doing another extra credit paper for Mrs. Wan to get a 110 in her class."
That made Emily's stomach drop, remembering that she actually had homework to do. She internally groaned and flipped Jake off when Jane looked down to take a bite of her pasta.
"You're just like your father, such a busy body."
Emily hummed in agreement, before taking a bite of her pasta, in hopes to end this conversation. Jake seemed tense, not really eating much. Emily nudged him just as he had done moments before to her. Jake shot Emily a questioning glance, with his eyebrow raised. Mentally sighing, Emily shot a glance down to the un-touched pasta, and then backed up towards the teen.
He shrugged before taking a big bite.
"So you told me about this winter formal, who are you guys going with?" Jane asked, looking at both of them with smiles. The pair flushed heavy shades of red - neither of them could meet Jane's eyes.
"Um, I think I'm taking Emily."
Jane's face broke out into happy shock, smiling and turning to face Emily. "Why didn't you tell me sooner!" Jane hopped up, grabbing her phone from the kitchen and taking her almost finished plate of pasta with her.
The two teens shared bashful looks as Jane was still talking from the kitchen, though it was muffled.
"We can pick out a dress for you! When is it?" Jane smiled at Emily. Emily wanted to bang her head on the table.
"This Friday." Emily said weakly.
Jane gave her daughter a deadpan look. "You're just now telling me that you're going to formal and we only have four days to find you a dress."
"To be fair, I didn't think I was going to go." Emily said, before pointing at Jake with her thumb, "but he said he'd take me."
Jake just grinned towards Jane as if to say, 'Please don't be mad at me'.
Jane hummed, putting her glasses on that she had hanging around her neck. A moment passed before she gasped at her phone and grinned slightly. "You'll just have to miss school tomorrow, we're going shopping!"
