After dinner was all said and done, the clock struck seven on the dot. Jane and Jake talked, while Emily sat there ready to study and go to bed.Emily spoke up suddenly, "Mom quit talking his head off." Emily laughed slightly, before grabbing Jakes arm. "We're going to study now, if you don't mind." Emily said, excusing the pair from the table. Jane stood and grabbed some plates, making her way back into the kitchen.
"That's fine with me, just don't do anything I wouldn't do!" Jane laughed. Emily fake gagged at the statement, Jake smirked and winked to Jane. The pair made their way towards Emily's room, leaving Jane by herself. She sighed towards the empty hallway.
She took all the dishes, humming to the song playing quietly on the radio. She glanced over, noticing the photo of herself, Emily, and Max all smiling in their pajamas on Christmas.
"She's growing up so fast, Max." Jane stated sadly, kissing her fingers and placing it over Max's lips on the photo. The feeling of the cold glass made a tear slip from Jane's eyes. "Damn emotions." She laughed, wiping her tears away.
Jake laughed a little when they got to Emily's door. "She's feisty. Now you see why I like older women." Jake stated in a teasing tone, watching as Emily opened her bedroom door.
Emily grimaced."Don't say that about my mom, asshole," The pair walked in the room, Jake cackling at Emily's angry face. Emily pouted. They both glanced down and noticed that Jake had a firm grip on her hand, realizing that they hadn't let go of each other when Emily grabbed his arm a few moments earlier.
They broke apart like they had been burned, the pair laughing nervously at that. They muttered apologies to each other, before shooting each other nervous glances. The mood seemed to shift to an awkward tense, that made it feel as if they couldn't quite speak.
"Are we ready to study?" Jake asked after a pregnant beat of silence, putting his hands in his pockets as he looked around the room nervously.
Emily laughed slightly, covering her mouth. "What? What's so funny?" Jake asked, his features turning into confusion which made Emily laugh more.
Emily wiped a tear from her eye as she spoke up, hoping to break the tense mood. "You just look so awkward and out of place."
Jake shot her a sheepish grin, taking another look around the room. The room was something straight out of a pinterest board, with white walls, gold trim, and plants galore.
"I guess I kinda do look out of place, don't I?" He questioned slightly, looking back at her.
Emily nodded as she pulled her textbooks out of her storage container that sat in the corner. She waved them to Jake who just sighed. That made Emily
giggle."Where's your dad?" Jake asked suddenly, noticing the framed picture behind the shorter girl. She turned, her eyes locking with the frame. It was a picture of her mother, her and her father at Disney World, standing next to Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Their grins seemed sleepy, but happy nonetheless. The light sunburn on their faces made the photo seem even more funny, but she couldn't help feel a empty pit set in when she sees it.
Emily gently walked towards the picture, Jake stepped quietly behind her. She ran her hands down the photos, a sad smile spreading across her face.
"A drunk driver hit him when he was coming home from work." She said, tracing the frame, the mood suddenly heavier than it was before. "It happened about two years ago, I was sixteen."
Emily turned to face Jake, she glanced at him
through her long lashes, noticing the sadness in his eyes. She didn't want pity.Jake grabbed her hand, and smiled down at her. "I'm sorry Emily." He spoke softly, pausing before continuing. "My mother left me when I was around five, so I understand losing a parent." He said, frowning.
"Let's study now, yeah?" Emily said, smiling softly.

"It's so.." He trailed off, staring, "ugly."
Emily gasped, looking down at the thing in question. "My dad got me that dog you bitch." Emily said, staring at her pug names Patches. "That's so rude."
The pair watched the dog, Patches snoring loudly. "Doesn't make it any less ugly." Jake shrugged after a beat of silence, looking over his text book where Emily was helping him. As soon as Jake said that, Patches sneezed herself awake making snot fly.
Patches then licked it off her face. The pair grimaced at the dog.Suddenly, Jake felt a heavy weight crash into thee side of his face, almost knocking him from the chair that he was sitting on. He looked to see Emily hold another pillow, and saw the one that had hit him. She smirked at him.
"What was that for?" he spoke, rubbing his cheek where the pillow hit him.
"My dog isn't ugly." Emily said, "Take it back," sitting up on the bed, cranking her arm back as if she was going to throw another one. Jake quickly grabbed the pillow by his foot and smirked.
"What if I don't?" He asked, dangerously taking one step towards the girl who was now standing on the bed.
Emily laughed evilly, before staring directly at Jake. "I'll just have to kill you, because I would die for Patches's honor."
Emily slid down from the bed, neither of the teens could take their eyes off each other. Emily took small steps towards Jake as Jake did the same. Soon they were standing about five feet apart.
Suddenly, Emily let out a war cry as she bolted towards the boy, Jake quickly following suit. The pair hitting each other with pillows, laughter and cries filled the air around them.
Jane heard the commotion, and walked towards Emily's room. Opening the door, she laughed at what she saw. "So this is what they call studying nowadays?"
Emily and Jake paused mid-battle, their faces flushed with exercise and smiles plastered in her face.
"It was for Patches's honor." Emily said, as if that cleared up the whole situation. Jane snorted, before looking at the pillow that had some how landed near the door. She picked it up, and examined it.
"For Patches's honor, you say?" She smirked, looking at the pair. Emily grinned and Jake laughed. Jane ran towards the pair, pillow high in hand, landing a few blows on the teens. The trio laughing and trying to dodge the rain of hits.
They all sighed, pooped from using so much energy. Jane excused herself, and told the pair good night before heading towards her room.
Jake and Emily just laughed at each other after a moment of silence.
