Sanyukta opened her eyes, unconsciously hoping to find Randhir beside her for the third straight morning. She rubbed her eyes as she realized that the bed was empty and stretched her arms. Randhir was finally in his own bed and the said bed was just a few footsteps away. Sanyukta decided to pay him an early morning visit. Her morning didn't feel complete if she didn't see his adorable sleeping face even if the tradition was just two days old.
******
Sanyukta cautiously opened the door to Randhir's bedroom. She didn't want to wake him and more importantly she didn't want to get caught. She didn't fancy being called a peeping Tom by Randhir.
She needn't have bothered however as Randhir was already awake and was engaged in doing pushups. He looked up the instant the door opened.
Sanyukta mentally banged her head as she watched a smirk slowly take form on Randhir's flushed face.
"So disappointed not to find me in your bed that you came calling the first thing in the morning?"
"You wish Shekawat!" Sanyukta huffed trying hard to look anywhere but at his bare torso that was gleaming with sweat. "And for your kind information you live with a girl. So you better dress with dignity."
"Look who is talking," Randhir said checking her out from top to bottom as he pulled out a shirt from his cupboard.
Sanyukta frowned as she tried to decipher the meaning of his words.
Oh damn!, she thought with indignation as she realized that she was dressed in the shortest of all the shorts she owned and a t shirt that barely covered her navel.
"You pervert!" Sanyukta yelled as she threw a pillow at him and stormed out of the room.
******
Sanyukta walked into the washroom in a hurry. She didn't particularly mind a bit of grease on her face but Randhir had laughed unceremoniously at her and told her to go wash up before the next class started.
She was about to walk the distance to the row of wash basins when her footsteps halted. Two girls were discussing 'a particularly juicy bit of gossip' as one the girls put it and the gossip happened to revolve around her.
"I can't believe that Rehan Bajaj and Sanyukta broke up," one of the girls exclaimed.
"What is there to not believe in that? In fact I am surprised they even lasted this long," the other girl said applying a coat of lipstick.
"Oh but he always looked so besotted with her!"
"Every relationship looks perfect to the outside world until the inevitable break up happens."
"Inevitable break up?"
The other girl only winked in response and continued applying lipstick with a mischievous grin.
"Don't tell me you know something about Rehan and Sanyukta's break up!!"
"You would too if you were as observant as I am."
"Oh do tell me!"
"Well you probably noticed that today Sanyukta and Randhir came to college together."
"So? They are friends aren't they and dream team members as well."
"Even I wouldn't care if they had just arrived together, prim and proper. But you should have seen them! Randhir was teasing Sanyukta about something and she was blushing!"
"I am probably very dense. But how does Sanyukta Agarwal blushing solve the mystery of her break up?"
"Dear girl! Use your brain! It is common knowledge that Sanyukta and Rehan broke up barely two days ago. Just two days later you see Sanyukta as normal as ever joking about with her friends. It can only mean one thing. Sanyukta is not particularly sad about her break up!"
"Why wouldn't she be sad? Who in their right mind would break up with Rehan Bajaj and be happy about it?"
"But there is more. Guess who Disha saw at the movie theatre on Saturday. Randhir and Sanyukta! She said they were least interested in the movie that was playing but extremely interested in each other. They left half way through the movie."
"Don't tell me that Sanyukta is having an affair with Randhir!"
"That is the most decent assumption we can make. You should hear the stories around college."
"Do you think Sanyukta cheated on Rehan? That too with his brother!"
"That is freaking enough!" Vidushi screamed.
The two gossiping girls nearly jumped and turned to look at a furious Vidushi who was standing right behind a teary Sanyukta who was looking at Vidushi with an equally startled look.
"How dare you spread such horrible rumors!" Vidushi said advancing towards the two frightened girls with a glare. "And you Miss speculative know it all! You aren't observant. You are nosey. If you know what's good for you, you had better apologize to my best friend and scurry away else you do know that Sanyukta is Vardhan sir's favorite. If I bring to his notice that you both have been harassing her he will personally make sure that you both have no careers left!"
******
"Wow," Sanyukta said in awe as she followed Vidushi out of the washroom. "Thank you," she added gratefully.
"You are not welcome. I am not going to keep standing up for you every time someone insults you even if you are my best friend. Learn to do it yourself. What the hell are you smiling at now?"
"You called me your best friend twice in the last five minutes," Sanyukta said happily linking arms with Vidushi and dragging her towards the classroom.
"Oh well you are my estranged best friend in that case!" Vidushi said attempting to free her arm from Sanyukta's grip.
"That sounds weird okay?"
"Whatever!"
"Vidushi I am sorry."
"For what?"
"You know for what."
"That girl is right. You really have been spending a lot of time with Randhir."
"Please Vidushi forgive me?" Sanyukta said holding her ears.
Vidushi sighed and stopped attempting to free her arm. "We had better go. We are getting late for class."
"Does that mean I am forgiven?"
Vidushi didn't respond but the faint smile on her face was a dead giveaway.
******
"You spent fifteen minutes in the washroom and still didn't get rid of the grease on your face," Randhir said slapping his forehead.
"Shut up Shekawat!" Vidushi and Sanyukta said in their signature singsong tone.
