"You badly need a haircut," Vidushi sighed as she brushed Sanyukta's waist length hair.
"No she doesn't. She looks good with long hair," Randhir said entering the room with a bowl of popcorn.
"Randhir did I mention that you are not allowed to enter the room. It is supposed to be a girls' night out."
"So?"
"How will it be a girls' night out if you keep popping in after every five minutes?" Vidushi said exasperated.
Randhir winked at Sanyukta and settled down even more comfortably on the bed as he munched popcorn. Sanyukta giggled at his antics.
"Randhir Singh Shekawat, if you don't want your hair braided and nails painted you better get out now!" Vidushi said.
Randhir scampered away. Vidushi's anger was legendary. He had heard rumors that she had even hit PKC sir with a chair in a fit of anger. Though the story was farfetched he didn't want to risk being hit by the many chairs in Sanyukta's room.
"That is one thing taken care of," Vidushi said latching the door. "Now you better tell me what the hell Randhir is doing in your house."
Sanyukta gulped. The look on Vidushi's face convinced her that she had a lot of explaining to do.
******
"You guys kissed!!" Vidushi exclaimed jumping on the bed.
"Vidushi shut up. Randhir is next door!" Sanyukta said shushing her.
"You are the reason he is next door!"
"I couldn't let him live in some abandoned building now could I."
"The point is you invited the guy you supposedly accidentally kissed to live with you."
"That guy also happens to be our friend for the past four years."
"Do you like him?"
"Of course I like him. If you didn't notice I am friends with him."
"Oh come off it! You know what I am talking about."
"For heaven's sake Vidushi! It hasn't even been a week since Rehan broke up with me!"
"So what? He is already dating that made up doll Ishika isn't he?"
Sanyukta's eyes welled up. It hurt a little every time someone spoke about Ishika and Rehan. The possibility that Rehan had cheated on her was the one that hurt her more than anything else. She could live with the fact that Rehan had fallen out of love with her but not with the fact that he had never loved her in the first place.
"Sanyukta?" Vidushi asked. She hadn't meant to casually blurt out about Sanyukta's break up. She had intended to make Sanyukta forget about her wretched break up. But she had achieved the exact opposite.
******
"How come you are leaving so early?" Randhir asked surprised as Vidushi walked out of Sanyukta's room and headed for the door.
"Sanyukta has a headache or so she says," Vidushi shrugged.
Randhir gazed at Sanyukta's room with a knowing expression. Sanyukta always blocked people out when she felt low. He did the same and hence knew that it didn't help much.
******
"Hey," Randhir said as he walked in.
"Oh hi!" Sanyukta said with fake enthusiasm.
"You are a terrible actor Sanyu."
Sanyukta's heart skipped a beat. Sanyu. People no longer called her that. Her mother was the only one who ever called her that. And it had been ages since she had spoken to her.
"Why did you fake a headache?"
"Why would I fake a headache?"
"Exactly my question. Why?"
"Randhir, please leave."
"I am not leaving till you tell me why you are upset all of a sudden. Did Vidushi say something? That girl has no tact."
"Randhir leave. Please."
"I am not leaving until you tell me what the hell is bothering you so much."
"Your brother broke up with me without giving me a reason. The entire college is buzzing with rumors that he left me for Ishika and I have this horrible feeling that Rehan cheated on me. So yes I am bothered and yes I have a legitimate reason to have a headache."
"Whoa," Randhir murmured as he took in Sanyukta's angry form. The last time he had seen her this angry was in their second year when he had accused her of having an affair with Parth. He gulped as he recalled the consequences of Sanyukta's epic anger. Despite his bravado he had privately decided never to awaken her anger. They both had volatile tempers and mountain sized egos. So the possibility that they would damage their friendship beyond repair if they gave in to their anger was high.
But this time Sanyukta's anger thankfully seemed to be directed not at him but at Rehan.
He put his arm around her to calm her down and almost instantly felt her relax into his embrace.
"Sanyukta?" Randhir murmured when she did not pull away from his embrace for a long time.
"Sorry," she whispered as she distanced herself from him.
"Wait," Randhir said grabbing her arm. "Are you crying?"
"Sorry. Now your shirt is all wet. I seem to have transformed into some kind of a cry baby isn't it?"
"Yes and the transformation does not suit you at all. We all love the strong Sanyukta who doesn't give a damn about what others think."
"Forget about others. What do you think Randhir? Do you think Rehan cheated on me?"
"The Rehan I know wouldn't cheat on you."
"The Rehan I thought I knew apparently loved me. But look how easily he broke up with me."
"Rehan did love you."
"Sometimes I think that it doesn't matter anymore. Rehan doesn't want me in his life. So be it."
They sat wordlessly for a couple of minutes, each unsure about what to say next when Randhir finally decided that a change of topic was in order.
"And don't listen to Vidushi. Your hair is just gorgeous," Randhir said fingering Sanyukta's silky hair.
"Really?" Sanyukta asked beaming. The last trace of tears had disappeared from her face.
"Yes and so are you. You look beautiful when you smile."
"What's with your flirting?"
"I am not flirting. It is the truth."
"Shut up and go to bed."
"Okay," Randhir said lying down on the bed and stretching his arms.
"Go to your bed Randhir!" Sanyukta chuckled hitting him with her pillow.
