The room was quiet.
The curtains were half drawn
Rahul sat on the edge of his bed, his hand gently stroking the little boy's hair.
Ishie had cried himself tired, but now his face was peaceful, his lashes long and still against his cheeks.
Rahul didn't move for a long time.
He just sat there, watching the tiny chest rise and fall, listening to the soft little breaths.
Somewhere deep inside, his heart squeezed --- a strange, protective warmth he hadn't felt before.
When morning finally arrived, the golden sun slipped through the curtains, painting the walls in soft light.
Rahul leaned forward and whispered,
"morning baby... wake up."
His voice was soft, like he was afraid to break something fragile.
Ishie blinked slowly, his eyes heavy with sleep.
For a second, he forgot where he was.
But then he saw Rahul's face and frowned a little, clutching the blanket.
Rahul smiled, pretending not to notice the hesitation.
"Come on, little one. Time to brush those tiny teeth."
Without waiting for an answer, he lifted Ishie up in his arms.
The boy was light, his head resting against Rahul's shoulder as though he had no strength left to protest.
In the bathroom, Rahul knelt down, holding the brush with a dab of toothpaste.
"Open your mouth, baby."
Ishie stared for a moment but then obeyed, tiny mouth opening reluctantly.
Rahul brushed gently, humming a silly tune to distract him.
"Brush, brush, brush... all the sugar bugs away..."
Ishie tried to hide a smile, but a giggle escaped.
Rahul's chest warmed.
That's it. One laugh at a time.
After brushing, Rahul wiped his face with a soft towel.
Ishie clung to it for a moment, then suddenly wrapped his small arms around Rahul's neck.
"Papa..." he mumbled, half-asleep, half-dreaming.
Rahul froze.
For a heartbeat, he didn't breathe.
The word echoed inside him, heavy and tender all at once.
But he didn't correct him.
He only tightened his hold, whispering, "It's okay. I got you."
Back in the room, Rahul realized he had no children's clothes.
His closet was full of crisp shirts, suits, and joggers nothing that would fit the tiny creature now curled on his lap.
He called his assistant quietly, ordering a set of children's clothes, toys, and essentials.
