The café smelled of roasted beans and warm cinnamon, the kind of scent that made people linger a little longer than they planned. Sarah arrived early, sliding into a booth by the window, her palms pressed flat against the cool wooden table. The sunlight spilled across her hands, steady and grounding. She needed the extra minutes to breathe, to collect herself, to remind her heart that this meeting wasn't about David—not really.

It was about the last missing piece of his lies, and about what she would choose to do with it.

For days, she had sat with the message from Lila, unsure whether to respond. The first night, she'd ignored it, telling herself she was done with revelations, done with peeling back layers of deceit only to find more shadows underneath. But then, the second night, she'd dreamed of a young woman staring at her from across a crowded gallery, eyes hollow with the same confusion Sarah once carried. She'd woken with tears on her cheeks and the realization that silence would only repeat the same cycle David had thrived on.

So she had replied: I want to meet you. We need to talk.

The bell above the café door jingled. Sarah looked up.

Lila.

She was younger than Sarah had expected—early twenties, maybe twenty-three at most. Her dark hair was tied back in a simple ponytail, her jacket slightly too large, as if borrowed in haste. She paused just inside the doorway, scanning the café until her eyes landed on Sarah. For a heartbeat, she hesitated. Then she squared her shoulders and walked forward, each step heavy with nerves but also with determination.

"Sarah?" she asked softly.

Sarah nodded. "Yes. You must be Lila."

They shook hands, a touch awkward but genuine. Then they sat, facing each other across the small table, two strangers bound by the shadow of one man's choices.

For a long moment, neither spoke. Finally, Lila broke the silence.

"I didn't know how else to reach you," she admitted. Her voice trembled, but there was grit beneath it. "I only found out about you and Jessica a few weeks ago. My mom—she never told me much about him. Just that he wasn't part of our lives anymore. But when I pressed her, when I started digging... it was like peeling back layers of rot. Everywhere I turn, I find more lies."

Sarah's chest tightened. The raw bewilderment in Lila's words was achingly familiar. It was like looking into a mirror of herself from months before—confused, betrayed, desperate to understand how someone could fracture reality so completely.

"You're not alone," Sarah said gently. "I've lived through the same questions. I thought I knew him. I built my life around him. And then I discovered I wasn't the only one."

Lila's eyes glistened. "How many?"

Sarah exhaled slowly. "More than either of us wanted to believe. Jessica. Andrea. Me. And now you. Maybe even others we don't know about yet."

The truth sat between them, heavy and merciless.

Lila lowered her gaze, tracing the rim of her mug with trembling fingers. "I don't know if I came here for answers or just to see if anyone else understood. Everyone keeps telling me to forget him, to move on. But how do you move on from finding out your father is a stranger?"

Sarah reached across the table and laid her hand gently over Lila's. "You move on by deciding he doesn't get to define you. He's part of your past, yes—but your future? That's yours alone."

Something shifted in Lila's eyes then. Not full relief, not healing, but the fragile beginnings of hope.

They talked for over an hour. Lila shared fragments her mother had told her—promises of love, David's trademark charm, and then his abrupt disappearance. Sarah listened, offering her own truths in return: the unraveling of her marriage, the confrontation at the amusement park, the legal battles, the therapy sessions that had stitched her back together piece by piece. They compared notes like survivors of a storm, mapping out the wreckage left behind.
