The morning light crept into the bedroom, pale and uninviting. Sarah lay still for a long while, her eyes fixed on the empty side of the bed. She had whispered to herself the night before—He doesn't get to define me anymore—but in the thin light of day, the words felt fragile, almost breakable.
Yet something inside her had shifted. It wasn't peace, not yet, but a sliver of resolve. She couldn't live with the not knowing. If David had built a life out of lies, then she needed to understand the full shape of those lies. She couldn't rebuild on sand. She had to see what had been beneath her feet all along.
Dragging herself out of bed, she padded through the hallway in her robe. The house smelled faintly of the coffee she hadn't made yet, the silence echoing around her like an accusation. But on the desk in the corner sat David's laptop. He had always guarded it, shooing her away when she leaned over to look, but in recent years his caution had slipped. He'd grown arrogant, careless, as though convinced she would never ask questions.
Her pulse quickened. For years, she hadn't touched it. Now, it felt like the only key left to her sanity.
She sat down, flipped the lid, and pressed the power button. The screen blinked to life with a cheery glow, utterly at odds with the dread pooling in her chest.
The login box appeared. Her breath caught. Could she even guess his password?
Her fingers hovered. Don't be naïve, she told herself. He was meticulous, secretive. He wouldn't choose something obvious—
Except, maybe he would. David liked control, but he also liked sentimentality when it suited him. He often said she "overthought things," and for years he'd leaned on that. With trembling hands, Sarah typed in the combination of his initials and their wedding date.
The screen unlocked instantly.
She flinched as though struck.
It wasn't just access. It was the cruelest reminder—that he had hidden his double life behind something so intimate, confident she'd never think to look.
Her chest tightened as she opened his email. The inbox looked harmless at first—client messages, flight confirmations, the kind of sterile paper trail she had once taken as proof of his busyness. But deeper inside, tucked into a folder labeled Personal, she saw the name.
Jessica.
Sarah's breath shuddered out of her.
She clicked. Message after message scrolled past her eyes: talk of school drop-offs, birthday plans, doctor's appointments. Casual notes about dinner, gentle reminders about groceries, photos of the children holding up crayon drawings.
It wasn't the content that gutted her. It was the ease of it. The domestic normalcy. Words she had once believed were hers alone—the shorthand of a life built over years—duplicated and woven into another woman's world.
Her hand clamped over her mouth as tears pricked her eyes.
So this is what he was doing when he missed our anniversary dinner. When he said his flight was delayed. When he smiled and told me he wished he could be home more.
Every word now felt like glass lodged under her skin.
She forced herself to keep scrolling. The dates lined up perfectly: when he was "in Chicago for a conference," Jessica thanked him for helping the kids with their science projects. When he was supposedly at a client retreat, he was in photos at Jessica's parents' barbecue.
Her stomach roiled. He hadn't just lied. He had orchestrated everything, down to the smallest detail.
A fresh wave of nausea hit when she noticed the attachments. Family photos—David with his arm wrapped around Jessica, the children tucked in front of them, smiling at the camera as though their world was whole. Sarah's hand shook as she clicked one open, the image blurring as tears filled her vision.
