The morning sun filtered through the blinds in Sarah's kitchen, painting slanted stripes of gold across the counter. Sarah sat at the small table, her coffee cooling untouched in front of her. Her hands were clasped tightly together, knuckles pale, as if she were holding herself in place.
The night before, after leaving the café where David's hollow apologies had rung in her ears, she had driven home in silence. She hadn't cried. The tears had burned away long ago, leaving a raw emptiness in their place. But when Melissa called—her voice urgent with worry—Sarah had told her everything. Every word David had said. Every excuse. Every final look before she walked away.
Melissa had listened without interruption, and then, with her characteristic bluntness, told her: It's time to get a lawyer.
Now, Melissa sat across from her, hair pulled back into a loose bun, her expression softened with concern. She stirred sugar into her coffee but didn't drink it.
"Are you sure you're ready for this?" she asked quietly. "Legal action isn't just about paperwork, Sarah. It's about opening every wound, putting everything under a microscope. It's going to hurt before it heals."
Sarah nodded, though her throat tightened. "I know. But I can't keep living in limbo. I need to protect myself. He's already stolen too much—I won't let him take the rest of my life too."
Melissa reached across the table, covering Sarah's trembling hands with her steady ones. "Then we'll do this together. You're not alone."
Sarah's eyes met hers, gratitude flickering through the exhaustion. "Thank you. For everything."
The Lawyer
An hour later, Sarah walked into the offices of Moretti & Associates, the click of her heels echoing against the polished floor. The space was professional but not intimidating—warm lighting, tasteful art, and a faint scent of lavender. She was ushered into a private office where Ms. Elena Moretti, a poised woman in her late forties, greeted her with a firm handshake.
"Sarah, I'm glad you came," Ms. Moretti said, gesturing for her to sit. "I know this isn't easy. But you've already taken the hardest step by walking through the door."
Sarah lowered herself into the chair, her heart pounding. "Thank you for seeing me on such short notice."
"That's what I'm here for." Ms. Moretti folded her hands, her calm gaze steady. "Why don't you start from the beginning? Tell me what brings you here."
Sarah inhaled sharply. For a moment, she thought she might choke on the words. But then, like a dam breaking, the story poured out. The photo at the amusement park. The confrontation with Jessica. The discovery of emails and accounts that painted a second life. The meeting at the café where David admitted to wanting "both worlds."
When she finished, silence filled the room. Ms. Moretti's expression was empathetic but professional. She tapped her pen lightly against her notepad.
"It's clear you've endured an extraordinary betrayal," she said at last. "I'm sorry you've had to experience this. But now, our focus is on moving forward and protecting your future."
Sarah exhaled, shoulders sagging. "I don't even know where to start. I feel like everything—my marriage, my finances, my identity—was built on lies. I don't know what's mine anymore."
"That's where I come in," Ms. Moretti said gently. "We'll begin by ensuring full financial disclosure. In cases like this, especially where deception has been ongoing, it's common for assets to be hidden. Bank accounts, investments, even property under another name. We'll track it all."
Sarah's stomach clenched. "I already found evidence of a separate account. Money that never showed up in our shared finances."
Ms. Moretti nodded, jotting down a note. "That's important. We'll subpoena full records. If he's diverted funds to support his second family, we'll find it. That money is marital property, and you have a right to it."
