Ankita stepped through the tall gates of the college, her heart pounding a little faster than usual. The morning sun painted the campus in golden hues, but to her, everything seemed shadowed by an invisible cloud of unease. Nervousness crept through her body like a slow-moving chill, despite her efforts to appear calm. It had been a month and a half since the horrifying night of her kidnapping, yet the memories still clung to her—faint whispers that refused to fade. Every echo of footsteps behind her, every passing whisper of the wind made her tense, as though danger still lurked nearby, waiting for the right moment to strike.
Adhiraaj had repeatedly assured her that the college was now under strict security. He had deployed guards at every possible entrance and exit, installed cameras at secluded corners, and personally checked the safety arrangements. He had walked with her all the way to the corridor, his comforting presence a silent promise that nothing would harm her again. But even with those reassurances, Ankita couldn't shake off the feeling that someone's eyes were following her from the shadows. She could almost sense a gaze trailing her movements, darting from behind trees, across classrooms, and around corners.
Her breath caught when a hand suddenly touched her shoulder. Ankita jumped, her body stiffening in panic before she turned around quickly. Relief washed over her when she saw Pallavi's bright, familiar smile beaming at her.
"Oh my God, Ankita! You're finally here!" Pallavi exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with a mix of surprise and happiness. "Honestly, I thought you'd never come back. It's been so dull without you around."
Ankita managed a small smile, the tension in her muscles easing a little. Seeing Pallavi's cheerful face reminded her of normal days—the days before everything had gone wrong. "I'm here now," she said softly, trying to sound more confident than she felt. "And you don't have to worry anymore. Things will get back to normal... slowly."
Without another word, Pallavi threw her arms around Ankita and hugged her tightly. The warmth of that embrace felt reassuring, almost like an anchor pulling Ankita back to the world she'd once known. For the first time in weeks, she allowed herself to relax—just a little—as she stood there in the middle of the bustling hallway, wrapped in the comfort of her friend's happiness.

Ankita and Pallavi were chatting animatedly near the window, their laughter echoing softly across the classroom. The morning sunlight streamed in, adding a golden warmth to their cheerful expressions. For a brief moment, the tension and whispers that usually surrounded Ankita seemed to vanish—she almost felt like an ordinary student again. That is, until the door creaked open.
Riya stepped inside with her signature air of superiority, flanked by her ever-loyal circle of friends who trailed her like shadows—her so-called minions. The atmosphere shifted instantly; the casual hum of conversation died down, replaced by an uneasy silence. Riya's sharp eyes locked onto Ankita, and the corners of her lips curled into a smile that didn't reach her eyes.
"Well, isn't this a pleasant surprise," Riya said, her voice sweet but dripping with insincerity. "Ankita, I'm so glad to see you safe and sound. You can't imagine how worried we all were. No one in Pune slept that night... not with Saheb's rage hanging over us."
Her words, though polite on the surface, carried an unmistakable edge—a reminder of the power that Saheb, and by extension Ankita's husband, held over everyone in the city. Ankita's stomach tightened. She recognised the manipulation in Riya's tone, the careful way she played the game of fear and flattery.
Riya went on, pretending to adjust her sleek hair. "My father insisted I look after you at college, make sure nothing happens to you. After all, we wouldn't want Saheb to be upset again, would we?"
Before Ankita could respond, Riya gestured elegantly toward the seats beside her group. "Come, sit with us," she offered, though her eyes sparkled with a quiet challenge. Her entourage shifted slightly, making space, but the invitation felt less like kindness and more like an order.
