Act 2: The Elixir of Life

James Potter was happy.

For months now, life had slowed down in a way he hadn't thought possible. He'd left his Auror post behind which meant no more late-night chases and less danger.  These days, his world was smaller, quieter, but infinitely richer. It was made of Lily's smile over breakfast, the giggles from the sitting room, and the sound of peace he hadn't heard in years.

For the first time since Dahlia's loss, he felt Lily coming back to life again. Those dark months when she'd shut herself away, when her brilliance had dimmed beneath grief, had nearly broken him. He'd watched helplessly as the woman with the brightest mind in Britain built walls around her heart. But Lily's mind had never truly rested; even when she was silent, her thoughts had never stopped spinning.

So when he stumbled upon her one evening, sleeves rolled up and hair tied back, bent over a cauldron that smelled faintly of mint and moonflower, he knew. She was working again, improving the very potion the Potters had become known for generations ago, Sleekeazy's Hair Potion. But Lily wasn't just perfecting it. She was reinventing it. Making it softer, stronger, better like she did with everything she touched.

And Merlin, was he proud.

When she told him she wanted to open a shop in Diagon Alley, his heart swelled. She named it Everbloom Potions and spoke about it with that spark in her eyes the one he'd fallen in love with years ago, when they were still students dreaming about changing the world. "It's time," she'd said, her voice steady but her hands trembling just a little and he'd smiled, taking those hands in his. "Then we'll do it," he told her. "Together."

She scared that the shop would fail but anything Lily put her mind too would never fail. Even if it did, potter money was enough for them to live on for the rest of their lives. After all, it was his duty, no, his joy, to support her. She'd given him everything, their home, their daughters, their peace. The least he could do was make sure the world saw what he'd always known. Lily Evans Potter was brilliant, unstoppable, and the very heart of his world.

Dahlia had a way of bringing sunshine into the house, even on the rainiest of days. Ever since she'd come back into their lives, it was as though the walls themselves had begun to hum with laughter again. Every morning, James would wake to the sound of her voice drifting from the kitchen and he still couldn't quite believe it was real.

Even when Sirius couldn't make it (though Merlin knew he tried) Dahlia was never really alone. She had thrown herself into family life with that fierce, Potter sort of energy: helping Lily in the shop, running around with Hyacinth through the garden, staying up late with James to listen to old stories he'd told a hundred times before but that she still wanted to hear. She opened up bit by bit, like a flower daring the sun again. There were moments when the shadows crossed her face, echoes of all she'd endured, but then Hyacinth would tug her hand, or Lily would nudge her toward the stove to taste a new potion, and Dahlia would laugh, the sound so bright it made James's chest ache.

And sweet Hyacinth seemed to have doubled in joy since her sister came home. She followed Dahlia everywhere, her adoration boundless and pure. They painted together on the patio, brewed mock potions in the kitchen when Lily wasn't looking, and fell asleep in a tangle of blankets and giggles more nights than not. Sometimes James would find them like that, Dahlia's arm protectively draped over Hyacinth, both of them breathing softly in the dim light, and he'd just stand there for a moment, unable to move or speak because how could he ever deserve this?

However, there was one thing bothering James. He hadn't said a word to Lily yet. The Hogwarts letters had come. Two of them, side by side. neat parchment envelopes with their daughters' names written in emerald ink. Dahlia Potter. Hyacinth Potter.
