"they say it's happy here, happiness is figurative, i'm happy 'cause of me, doesn't matter where i'm living."

- west coast, the neighborhood

"hi, i'm calum." his soft blonde highlights stood out against his raven hair, his lips in a small grin. and his accent was different but i couldn't tell what it was.

"i'm evangeline," i look over at the boy, wondering why he had spoken to me, and then looking back out at the ocean.

"i'm just moved up here, from australia. you seemed to, uh, look my age."

"well, welcome to california," i bite my lip as i gazed at the beautiful boy. "sorry you had to move here."

"why do you say that?" his eyebrows furrow as his lips form a confused pout.

"everyone thinks california is different from everywhere else. that it is happier than any other place. well, it isn't. any place can be sad, even california."

"oh, i see."

"yeah," i knew he wanted to ask more questions yet he kept his mouth shut and i was grateful. I continued looking as the sun lowered from the sky.

"so, if you don't mind me asking, what are you doing out here?"

"watching the sunset. what are you doing?"

"just went for a walk."

"oh." my eyes go from his face to the sunset multiple time, back and forth back and forth.

"so you like sunsets?"

it was then that my smile wasn't fake. i grinned wildly. "i love them! they are just so beautiful, don't you think? and so peaceful, too!"

"yeah," he smiles brightly back, looking at me. "they are."
