9 months had passed, Riza and Roy's friendship grew more and more with each passing day, till the point where they were just used to each other's presence. He loved teasing her and she loved giving him smartass responses. The late night meetings became regular and were more meaningful. That is, until Mr. Hawkeye found out one night when he went down for a glass of water

"What are you two doing?"

"Mr. Hawkeye! Me and miss Riza just happened to come down for a glass of milk at the same time"

"That so?" Riza looked at her father with furrowed brows

"Yes, father, that is so." She answered angrily. Her father said nothing and he went back to his room

"Riza?" Roy looked at her, she looked so irritated, she was so calm and collected, it was strange seeing her like that..

"These late night talks need to stop."

"Riza are you okay?"

"It's okay, Roy, I know it's okay I just want it to stop."

"Whatever you say, Riza." She got up and went straight to her room.

A few nights had passed and the atmosphere between them was disturbed, they hardly spoke, it was as if Riza was avoiding him, avoiding his sight, avoiding what she didn't want to confess.

'Was it wrong for me to say that?' She kept thinking.

One week later, Riza had enough, it was 4 in the morning, sleep looked so far in the distance so she decided on something, she got dressed and went to Roy's room and slowly opened the door, he was sound asleep, so peaceful, like a baby.

'What a weird thought, Riza!'

She slowly shook his shoulder, he fidgeted a little before opening his eyes to see a young blonde in front of him

"Riza?" He said hoarsely, she giggled at the sight in front if het

"Get up and get dressed, meet me outside in 5 minutes."

"Wai... Ehm Riza wait... Wha?" He blinked a few times before realizing that Riza was sneaking out through his bedroom window.

"Use the tree to come down. Be careful. 5 minutes!"

And then there was no Riza, Roy sat up.

'What's gotten in to her?' He brushed that thought away and quickly got dressed and followed her path down to the front door

"Let's run!"

"You woke me up for this?"

"Not just that, silly. Follow me and I'll show you." And she started running, she was in great physical shape so she was a fast runner. They ran and ran and ran until they reached the little village. They ran the village up and down, they ran around the fountain and splashed water at each other, they ran through every little block and street there was and they met at the fountain again, they sat on its ledge to catch their breath

"Why now?" Roy smiled

"Just.. because." She smiled back. She stood up and held his hand "let's go, it's now over yet!"

She pulled Roy hard and started running, he barely caught himself before falling flat on his face. They reached a building right in the middle of a dead end street

"It's deserted!" Riza told a worried Roy.

They both started climbing the house carefully until they reached the rooftop, that's where they sat next to each other, they stayed silent for a few minute then Riza said in a grin "there it goes" and pointed at the first ray of the rising sun.

They sat there, hand in hand for the first time, she leaned her head on his shoulder, and they just embraced the moment, printing it into their souls for as long as they both will live

"You still haven't told me what made you do this?"

"On my 12th birthday, my mother woke me up at 4 in the morning, we climbed the tree down to the front door and we ran all the way to the village, and we climbed this very house. Father was asleep of course... She was sick and I lost her a few months later."

"I'm sorry to hear that, Riza."

"He was a different man back then, more hope in his eyes and more than alchemy on his mind," she continued
"And that's why I was trying to hold the tears in that day you came, It was my birthday..." He held her hand tighter

"But it's okay, time heals wounds you can say, and maybe you were my birthday gift?" She grinned and he laughed.

"I think we should be heading back, your father wants me up at 7!"

"I hope it all works out for the best for you, and who knows, fate might have it and we would meet again." She smiled and so did he.

"You know, this is the first time you've set foot outside the house." She commented

"It is? I was so delved in studying I didn't even realize I forgot how the sun looked." he grinned.

They both climbed down and ran back all the way back home.
