"I wonder what her name was..." Andy pondered as we began walking out of the room we got our pre-test lecture in.
"Good god, can you shut up? Itwasn't anything, she was simply keeping her brother from killing us, it's not that big of a deal" I told him flatly, rolling my eyes and looping my thumbs into my belt loops. He all of the sudden looked discouraged, as if her not wanting to go to court as a witness to a murder was a sign that she liked him. There was a short silence between us before Andy spoke.
"You nervous?" He asked me. Inside, my head was screaming
'Fuck yes I am!'
But I had already decided I was done with all the Candor Honesty bullshit, plus, I had way too much pride to admit it.
"No, why? Are you?" I said quickly, almost quickly enough to make it slightly suspicious.
"Uh, no... No, why would I be? c'mon man, it's just a test, I always ace these things" he said before we began filing into narrow hallways lined with steel doors. I could almost feel how tense and unsure he was.
"Hey, dude, relax" I reassured him.
"What are you talking about?" He said before turning into the first available room, he turned and waved before shutting the door behind him.
His dark green eyes were pulsing with anxiousness, yet his facial expression hid it rather well. I walked for a few more minuets, alone down the hallway before I found an empty door at the very end.
I walked through to find a man, about 5-6 years older than me, shoulder length golden blonde hair and blue eyes with skin tanned enough to make you believe he worked out in the Amity fields. He was wearing blue and white.
Erudite...
He shot me a blank look, his facial expression was completely unreadable. He looked from me to the chair in front of him. It looked like a chair you sit in during a dental appointment... Only with wires and panels connected to it. I took the hint and sat down in it.
"Candor, this should be interesting" he said before handing me what looked like a shot-glass of... Something.
"Say anything you want about Candor, but I would be extremely relieved if you told me what the hell THIS is" I said, gesturing towards the glass. He smirked, that was the first bit of real emotion I had gotten from him since I got in.
"It's a syrum, everyone takes it before their test, it helps the test run smoothly, now please, just drink it already..." I drank it reluctantly, put the glass down on the tray beside me and laid down.
"Now relax and let your mind go blank, once you are in the sim let your mind run wild and do whatever it is you gotta do, sound simple enough for you Candor?" I rolled my eyes but did what he instructed.
I closed my eyes for a second or two before opening them again. There was nothing around me but mirrors and the chair I had been sitting on, the funny thing was, i couldn't see my own reflection in any of the mirrors. I turned around to see more mirrors, I turned back, now the chair was gone.
"Damn..." I muttered. "What kind of drugs did they give me?" I wondered aloud.
"Could be anything" I voice said.
This wasn't just any voice, it was mine. I turned around once fully and saw nothing. Then I blinked. When I opened my eyes there was a thousand of me staring back, doing exactly as I did. Then I felt something grab my headphones and pull them away from my neck from behind. I whipped my entire body around to see who it was... But it was me.
But how?
"Morning Quayle," it said. "Confused yet?" It began laughing before it started running away with my headphones. I followed it around the maze of mirrors that surrounded me.
Whenever I lost sight of it I followed it's laughter. Then finally I found a clearing, the heart of the maze shall we say, without any mirrors other than the ones that sealed off the small no-mirror-land from the rest of the maze.
The other me was gone, and my headphones were around my neck once again. I sighed.
"Chose. I heard the voice say from behind me.
"Chose what?" I asked it. It laughed.
"The clock is ticking Quayle, tick-tock-tick-tock-tick-tock" it went on imitating a clock in the background as I attempted to figure out what the actual hell it meant.
I turned around to see two pedestals, one holding a large piece of raw meat, the other a large knife.
I say the image of them both begin to flicker, "tick-tock-tick-tock" the voice taunted. I ran towards he second pedestal and grabbed the knife off of it. Then I heard a loud bark behind me.
"Oh shit..." I murmured.
I turned to see a large black and white husky, no, it was a wolf with the fur of a husky, it had to be a cross, with more wolf than domestic pet.
It barked again and spit and foam flew across the clearing. It's yellowish fangs glistened with the remnants of it's last kill, some black stains, cracks and chips coated it's razor-like teeth. Foamy drool slid down its fangs and onto the floor, small amounts of blood had also oozed out of its mouth. It's ragged look, scars and devilish stare told he this was not going to end well for me if I didn't do something, and now.
It tilted it's head and began circling me, I moved accordingly, being careful not to turn my back on it.
I glanced down only for a second to check if I still had the knife from before. I glinted in my hand when I brought it up to hold in front of me as protection. It growled, then began to crawl it's way towards me, I could hear its claws clacking against the ground. I began yo back away, but the animal began yo pick up speed. Then I turned and ran, i watched as the maze of mirrors fell like dominos and sunk back into the floor. I ran for a good thirty seconds before it snarled, caught up to me, then pounced with an enormous amount of speed and force. It's piercing yellow eyes were lit with confidence. I knew I was going to die in this sim, just as you would in a dream, I closed my eyes and waited for death, accepted it. But nothing happened. I opened my eyes, the animal had stopped not even 5 centimetres from my nose. I heard it's last breathe escape from its mouth before I watched as its eyes glazed over. I felt the knife slipping out of my hand, I had forgotten I even had the knife in the first place. But my hands were now wet, sticky and likely stained from the blood. The air around my seemed to turn into copper, it was the only thing I could smell, that and the mangy thing's dog-breath before it's body slid off the knife and fell to the ground. I felt guilty about killing it, but then remembered it was only a test and i never really killed it. I closer my eyes and took one long, deep breathe. Then opened my eyes...
I was back in the testing room.
The man from erudite that had been administering my test was standing over me. His blue eyes were wide and full of concern.
"H-how, but..." He stuttered.
"What?" I asked him. "What happened? What was my result?" He turned away from me and stayed silent "uh, hello?" He muttered something to himself before turning back to me and grabbing me by both my shoulders, our eyes locked.
"You must not tell anyone, you must keep yourself a secret, you, my boy, are in grave danger" his voice was full of fear for me.
"W-why?" I stuttered. "What is my result?!" I demanded.
"Erudite, Abnegation, Dauntless, and Amity, every faction except your own..." I looked at him, thinking this may be a joke.
"N-no, that's impossible, a person can only ever belong to one faction, or none, nobody can belong to mor-"
"Wrong!" He snapped. "You belong to more than one, I belong to more than one, We are the Divergent, and we must stay hidden, they are afraid of us, nobody can know..." His fingernails were digging into my skin and my arms felt as if they were going to be ripped off. At first I was sure it was a joke, but I could now tell he was not kidding, and I was in serious trouble.
"W-what do I do? How can I hide? What's ping to happen if I'm found?!"
I asked him. He turned and entered "Candor" into my test file and grabbed my arm again to rush me out the back door.
"Stay hidden, it's a dangerous world out there boy..." He said before shoving my out into the hallway.
