Chapter 2
••
The street bumped against Jeff's plastic and it felt way worse than the comforting grass. But he was still in shock that the dog had thrown him all the way over the fence and out to the middle of the road. Jeff stayed still, trying to relax and stop shaking. He tried to breathe steadily.
By golly, I'm a cup! I can't breathe, I have no mouth! He thought and laughed dryly.
Just when Jeff was about to start rolling again, a rumbling sound caught his attention. Then, out of the blue, a huge gray object came speeding towards him. The object's two front legs were spinning round and round, making it move faster. It did not slow down for Jeff at all. The thing's right leg practically ran him over, and before he knew it, Jeff was bouncing along with it. The thing seemed to be pulling Jeff along.
Jeff looked up. The thing's belly was covered in what looked like a whole bunch of wires and pipes.
What kind of thing is this? Jeff thought. It doesn't seem to have fur, or feathers, or any skin at all. What should I do? Would it notice if I climbed aboard? Well, I guess I'll find out.
With all his might, Jeff hurled himself up and tucked himself under one of the pipes. To his amazement, the thing did nothing; it didn't even slow down, just kept speeding along. Relieved, Jeff relaxed and decided that he would wait for awhile before he hopped off. Not much after that, he felt himself drift into a deep sleep.

"Jeff! Jeff, wake up! It's dark out!"
Jeff opened his eyes slowly, and had to blink multiple times before they adjusted to the dark, windy night. Jeff examined the street about a foot beneath him, whizzing by at an untold speed. Then Jeff remembered how he had attached himself to that strange animal. He must've still been on it.
Jeff turned to where the voice that had woken him up had came from, and he almost gasped at the sight of the other cup that was sitting there, a couple of inches away.
"Carl?" he asked, flabbergasted.
Carl smiled meekly. "Hi, Jeff."
Jeff blinked again. "What are you doing here?"
"Well, I'm doing what you're doing," he answered with pride. "I figured that if you could find a new purpose for yourself, I surely could as well."
"But, how did you—?"
He interrupted Jeff. "Easy. I followed you. I slipped outside right after you did, slid under the fence that the dog threw you over, and attached myself, just in time, to the same car you'd attached yourself to. And you never even noticed."
Jeff swallowed, taking this all in. He couldn't decide whether he was happy that Carl was here, or if he was annoyed by it. But, he decided to go with happy.
"Well," he started. "I'm glad you came."
Carl smiled at Jeff's reply. "I'm glad I came, too."
