As the top history student my university gave me something they shouldn't have, and I mean they shouldn't have. It was a human sized statue of Anubis. An actual artefact from an Egyptian exhibition. they were like "He'll protect you." No he was a god of embalming not protection. Well protection of the dead. The people who mummified the deceased would often wear a mask of Anubis to be closer to the god. If my hunch is correct if I give him to the museum he will come to life with the Pharaoh and he can embalm him every night rather than Ahkmenrah doing it himself. He IS a king of course. I check on my sleeping brother and pick up the phone and call the museum.
"Hello. Dr McPhee. Museum Director how can I help?"
"Hi, Dr. I have an Egyptian artefact I would like to donate and personally place in your department."
"What artefact is it?"
"It is a human sized statue of the God Anubis. From an expedition 40 years ago. I was given it by my university."
"Well. Thank you Miss. We would love to accept it, our Egyptian section is looking a bit bare, a tablet and a mummy. That's all."
"Thank you. I will bring it over now. Bye."
"Goodbye."
I hung up and carried my brother and pushed the statue round the block on a skateboard. Well it was too heavy to carry and I don't have a car here yet. I was met at the door by Larry. "I bring a gift." I said with a smile. "For the king."
"Do you have a crush on a mummy?"
"No. he seemed down about having to wrap himself up at night so I brought him a hand. The god of embalming himself." We managed to move the heavy statue into the huge chamber.
"Well. You're the expert where should it go?" He asked.
"Behind the head of the sarcophagus, so he can watch over Ahkmenrah and assist him if needed." We placed the statue down and admired it. "I hope he likes it."
"Well.. You're about to find out." As we stood in front of the sarcophagus the tablet began to glow. The Anubis stepped down off its small pedestal and looked over the two of us. I was stood with my left foot towards Ahkmenrah's sarcophagus and Anubis nodded at me as I was showing respect and no intent of harm. Larry on the other hand was stood right foot forward. Anubis pointed the golden spear in his hand at Larry. "Wait no I mean no harm."
"Larry move your feet."
"What?"
"Put your left foot towards the coffin. Now." He did as he was told and the Anubis stood down. "Its respect for their king." I opened the coffin and helped Ahkmenrah out. "Pharaoh." I greeted.
"Yano. You can just call him Ahk?" Larry said to me as I helped Ahkmenrah out of his bandages and handed him his Deshret.
"Are you okay if I do?" I asked.
"Yes. Call me what you like." he said as he took the Deshret.
"Well... Ahk, you wanna show me around this museum?"
"I would be delighted." We were about to walk out the door when my little brother came wandering around the corner rubbing his tired eyes. "Who is this?"
"This is my little brother Joshua. Josh say hi to Ahk."
"Hi." he said looking up at the majestic Pharaoh in front of us. "You're an Egyptian. My big sister loves them."
"Yes. Thank you Joshua. I only said to say hi." I said turning a light pink. I looked up at Ahk who smiled at me.
"It's okay. come on. Allow me to show you round."
"Allow good ol' Jedediah look after the little one." A person spoke, I looked around but saw no one. "Down here" I looked down at the floor to see a tiny little cowboy, who couldn't have been much bigger than my fingernail.
"What?"
"I'll look after him, you go with Ahk."
"uh. okay. Thanks." Ahk led me out and around the museum. He introduced me to so many amazing people. I met Atila the Hun, Sacagawea and Teddy Roosevelt. "Ahk this is so cool."
"I knew you would be amazed. Thank you for the gift."
"It's the least I could do for the king." I smiled. He was leading me back to the Egyptian section when we walked a grand piano. "Woah."
"Do you play?"
"I have."
"Play for me."
"Its an exhibition. A historical artefact. I can't touch that." He took my hand and placed it on his shoulder. He widened his eyes sarcastically.
"Oh no. You're touching a historical artefact." I laughed at his sarcastic comment. He smiled down at me the tan of his skin a beautiful colour, the faded Khol around his eyes only highlighted how light they were. I ran my hand down over his Wesekh. My hand continued down over the patch of bare skin reaching the waist band of his Shendyt. I then wrapped my arms around him. When I realised what I was doing I let go.
"I'm sorry."
"No. it was... fine... You seemed fascinated by my attire."
"Yes, clothing doesn't preserve very well so we have to make best guesses on what you actually wore but now I see it. it is so much more beautiful than we picture it to be. All sewn into with gold thread. The bright colours of red and blue."
"I am royalty I could have whatever colour I wanted. You, I would have you wear white and gold, with jewellery you could only dream of. I will have you wear the robes of my people one day."
"That would be an amazing experience Ahk."
"Tomorrow it is then. Tomorrow night." We walked back to his section where we were greeted by my Anubis statue. "I have returned to be embalmed." Anubis nodded and lead us back towards the sarcophagus. He wrapped up Ahk and returned to his plinth. Ahk laid down in his coffin.
"Until tomorrow night." I said as the tablet began to glow. I walked out to find my brother in the hall of miniatures holding the now frozen Jedediah.
"Jed, Jed please move." he said gently touching the small figure.
"Josh he wont move until sunset tonight." It was now that I noticed a small Roman centurion in his other hand. "Who's this then?"
"Octavius. He's Jed's friend."
"Ohh... Put them down and we'll come and see them tonight yeh?"
"Yeah." I took his hand and lead him home. When I had put him to bed I received a phone call.
"Hello?"
"Hi, it's Larry."
"Hi, how'd you get my number?"
"I looked you up on the student data base. Anyway. Would the name Kahmunrah ring a bell to you?"
"Of course, it's Ahk's big brother. It is thought that he murdered Ahk for the throne, out of jealousy."
"So if I were to say that McPhee unknowingly put Ahk and his tablet on loan to the very museum that holds Kahmunrah that would be a bad thing. Right?"
"Very. He would only aim to kill his brother again and from what I know of the tablet, if he dies now, under the tablet's power, he'll never come back to life, ever again."
"Oh god. You know Egyptian culture, myth and Legend better than anyone I know. Come with me to DC to help save Ahk? please."
"I have my brother."
"My 18 year old son Nick will look after him. Please. For Ahk."
"Fine. I'm on my way over."
