*~*~*
Right as it's misty hand was only centimeters away from my arm that had gone freakishly pale, another hand came and smacked the creature away. I breathed a sigh of relief and turned to look at whoever did it, then gasped.
"Remus? Sirius? James? Dumbledore? What are you doing here?" I said, looking at them, bewildered.
"What does it look like we're doing? Saving you life, love!" Sirius said, over enthusiastically.
I rolled my eyes and pushed fake-dust off me, clearing my throat awkwardly.
"Well, I best be off now. Oh, and Black?"
"Hmm?"
"I don't need you, of all people, to save me," I said, giving him a glare and storming out of the house.
"WHAT ARE YOU?"
As I was about to transform, I looked down at Remus.
"Me?" I said, and then gave him a wry smile, "To you I may as well be nothing. Small, agile, and strong, yet you can kill me, like this," I whispered, make a fist as if I were crushing something, "I am nothing to you, Remus Lupin. And it would be best if you stayed away from me. I may be small but I can be dangerous,"
He gave me a look of surprise.
"So I was right?"
"You are always right, Remus. Tell James and Sirius bye- and tell Dumbledore that I'll be fine, alright?"
"W-Where are you going?"
I laughed, and shook my head, walking towards him and putting a hand on his shoulder.
"Remus, Remus, Remus. So smart yet so daft when it comes to things like this. Like goodbyes,"
"Goodbyes?"
"Of course, Remus. Now that you've figured out, I'm not longer safe."
"A small creature like you? Yeah right!"
I smiled at him and shook my head.
"My kind is almost extinct, Remus. What am I to do? Allow them to take me because I'm different? Because I was never truly human?" I hissed, getting close to him. "Listen here, Remus. You tell James and Sirius that I am perfectly fine. Tell them that I won't be back for a while, and that if they tell anyone about this, I will kill them. Got it?"
Remus nodded and gulped, running back into the house. I nodded and transformed, my body shrinking and wings sprouting from either side of me. I flapped wildly, and soon found myself in the air, flying away.
Now that they know my secret, I need to get as far away from here as possible, before they find me. I may be small and not scary seeming, but I'm far too dangerous.
*~*~*
I flew until it was dark. At last, I landed in the branch of a tree in the middle of nowhere. They could never find me here, I'm sure of it.
"Gracelyn?"
Stupid Dumbledore, always ruining everything for me.
I switched back and glared at him from the tree branch.
"What are you doing here?" I hissed.
Dumbledore smiled at me.
"To see if my child is okay,"
I snorted.
"Adopted child," I said with a shake of my head.
"But my child, all the same. Are you okay, Gracelyn?"
"I'm fine. Just dandy. I left the only true friends I had, probably scarred Remus for life, almost got myself killed.. Just an ordinary day in Gracie's life!" I exclaimed, throwing my hands up and giving Dumbledore another glare, and then sighed. "Of course I'm not okay, Dumbledore! That's a stupid question!"
"I'm sorry. I don't know how to deal with teenage girls," He said, looking amused.
"Never say that to a TEENAGE GIRL, DUMBLEDORE!"
And then I smacked myself on the forehead.
"Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid.. I'm so thick. Why did I think this could work out?" I sighed, jumping off of the branch and landing on the ground, "Tell me, Dumbledore. You raised me. Where do I come from? Why am I so stupid? Why am I here? I should be dead!"
Dumbledore sighed and looked at me.
"I knew there would be a time when you would start questioning your existence.." He murmured.
"Of course there would be! I'm not supposed to be here! I'm supposed to be dead! Gone! Poof!"
"Calm down, Gracelyn-"
I walked up to him angrily and got close to his face, giving him a glare.
"Never tell a teenage girl to calm down," I hissed.
And then I turned on my heel, walking back towards the tree.
"Tell me, Dumbledore, what am I? Say the words. Come on."
"Gracelyn-"
"No. Say them. Now."
"It's not going to prove anything," He said quietly.
I cackled like a maniac.
"Not prove anything? Yeah, okay! It'll prove I'm supposed to be dead!" I screeched, gesturing towards the sky, "I'm supposed to be up there, with the rest of my kind because of a stupid game! NOW SAY THE WORDS THAT WILL PROVE IT ALL, DUMBLEDORE!"
And then, as he looked down, I knew I had defeated him.
"You are the Golden Snidget who evaded capture for six months on Bodmin Moor in 1884," He said, not meeting my eyes.
"For six months, Dumbledore! Six months I had to run, and look at me!" I yelled, "LOOK AT ME! I'M STILL RUNNING! AND WHY IS THAT, DUMBLEDORE?"
"Because.. because of a game. That killed almost all of you,"
"YES! A GAME! IT'S NOT ALWAYS A GAME, DUMBLEDORE, AND THE PLAYERS DON'T ALWAYS CHEAT!"
"What are you on about?"
"I CHEATED DEATH, DUMBLEDORE! I CHEATED DEATH!"
