Vanessa was riding on a high of emotion. She was excelling in classes. She was feeling upbeat. The only thorn in her side was Pansy Parkinson.
"I hear the Malfoys are doing charity work." Pansy had her cornered in the library, Millicent Bulstrode standing close behind. "Yeah, I heard they're taking in strays."
"Oh, shove of Pansy." Vanessa fights the urge to throw her book at the girl. Her biggest concern is not angering Pansy but angering Madam Pince for mistreating a book.
"Gonna sleep outside or do you think you might actually get a room? Maybe you'll share a bunk with one of the house-elves." Pansy laughs sharply.
"I already have my own room, it's nice actually. Probably nicer than anything you'll ever own." Vanessa shoots back at her.
"Oh please, they probably gave you whatever room they hated most." Pansy rolls her eyes. "I'm surprised they would even want you, basically a mudblood. How hard did you have to beg to get them to take you in?"
"My parents are wizards. I come from a line of wizards. I'm nearly at the top of our class. I may have been raised by muggles but I'm excelling at magic with a rich future ahead of me. I have people who care about me so much that they made sure I could be with them. You have nothing but a last name that won't even belong to you forever." Vanessa is over her trying to ruin anything good. Pansy's face darkens. Vanessa is quick to shove past her and dart from the library. She isn't sure where that confidence came from but she relished the anger and hurt on Pansy's face.
The good mood wasn't solely focused on her either. It seems a relief and happiness has spread over the entirety of the school as everyone started to feel safe again. The mandrakes are even closer to being ready, no new attacks, it seems whatever had been going on has stopped. Maybe the "Heir of Slytherin" got too close to getting caught, maybe they grew bored, but either way it seemed they were no longer interested and attacking the Muggleborns. Things really seemed to be returning to normal.
During the Easter holiday Snape went around to all of the second years to inform them that they must choose their subjects for third year and on. She looks at the list of five new subjects they can take.
Arithmancy
Care of Magical Creatures
Divination
Muggle Studies
Study of Ancient Runes
She's at a table in the common room with all of the second years, all of them bouncing ideas of what they are choosing. An occasional older student will walk by and give them advice.
"My father insist I take at least three electives." Draco says that he looks at the list. "Naturally I would take arithmancy and ancient runes. But I'm unsure of what to take for the third one."
"I think you would just love muggle studies." Vanessa grins at him.
"I ought to tell my parents to no longer be your guardians for that suggestion." Draco rolls his eyes.
"Well, I'm definitely taking care of magical creatures." Vanessa marks it down. "And divination..." She adds quietly as she marks it down. When she had first seen it on the list, her heart soared. Her odd dreams made her drawn to the class.
"Ooh I'm taking those too!" Daphne squeals. "We should take ancient runes together too! I have an aunt who works on runes and it's really interesting! Plus, we can take all of our classes together." Vanessa nods in agreement and marks the third class.
"Yeah, I think I'll take those three too, don't want to be lost without my study buddy." Blaise marks his page.
"Oh, maybe I'll take magical creatures with you guys then." Draco marks it down.
