/Sophie's POV/
A quiet, unrecognizable voice prompts me awake. My eyes start to flutter and the sound of Kenzie crying fills my ears. I suddenly become very alert and try and spring up to snatch my baby sister away from the strange woman who is holding her. As I make a leap forward, the IV in my arm painfully tears and the various wires connected to my chest strain against me. My surroundings come into focus and the sterile scent of the hospital room fills my lungs.
"What are you doing with her?" I exclaim at the odd stranger.
"Hey, hey, calm down. You don't know me, but I'm Danielle, your aunt. Do you remember anything that happened?" She asks gently, slightly confusing me. I knew dad had a sister, but he never spoke to her or about her. However, the fiery red tone of her hair matched my own, leading me to believe her.
"What am I suppose to remember? Where's mom and dad?"
"Sophie, I'm sorry to say, but they um. They didn't make it. There was a fire at your house, only you and Kenzie made it out," Danielle softly breaks the news, but with a small, barely there, trace of disgust and sarcasm. A sob escapes my mouth as I stare at my newly discovered aunt and baby sister. Oh god my baby sister is going to grow up without a mom or dad. She's never going to know how it feels to come home on a bad day to smell Moms delicious homemade chocolate chip cookies or play soccer in the rain with Dad.
"Are- are you sure? They're really gone?" I cry. Aunt Danielle nods her head with a sympathetic smile. Just then, the doctor walks in with a tall woman in a suit.
"Hey there Sophie, I'm Doctor Lang. How're you feeling?" The question prompted my mental checklist of injuries. My lungs and throat hurt a bit, there were a few cuts on my arms and stomach that were stitched up and a small gash along my hairline that was stitched up, but other than the dull ache of these injuries, I felt as good as I possibly could right after finding out I lost my parents.
"Umm fine I guess. What about Kenzie? She looks fine, is she?"
"She's as good as a new, you really protected her. The fire fighters found you two in an open field with your arms around her. You wouldn't let her go despite your own injuries. Now, your injuries aren't as bad as they could be, however, you do have a slight concussion so we will be keeping you another night to monitor you and if nothing complicates your health, you'll be good to go tomorrow." She says while messing around with dials. Just then, the other woman in the room clears her throat.
"Hello Ms. Bishop. I am Agent Reinheart and I came to speak with you about what the next steps outside of the hospital are. Now I understand that you've never met your aunt, nonetheless, we have checked to make sure she is blood related and is able to provide for you. She has graciously agreed to taking you and your sister under her care and once you are eighteen, you have the opportunity to become the guardian of your sister. As of now, you must stay with your aunt in her house in Salem and will fly out of John Wayne airport after the doctor releases you. If you have any questions, give me a call," and with that, the agent handed me a business card and walked out of the room.
"Wait. Salem? Airport? What? We're moving?" I panic.
"Yes Sophie, you're moving from California to Massachusetts, where I own a rather large house. I know it's a large move, especially away from your friends a week before senior year starts, but we can make the best of it. I've already called my husband and he's out buying the basic furniture for yours and your sisters rooms. When we get there, we can buy you a whole new wardrobe, and other things that you'll need. Sound like a plan?" Aunt Danielle asks.
"I guess that's the only thing I can agree to. Thank you for taking us in. Can I at least see my friends one last time before we leave?" I solemnly ask.
"I suppose if they visit you, you can. But we can't go making a bunch of trips after you get released. I already have the tickets for tomorrow evening and I don't want to change the times unless it's for medical reasons. Now, I have to go to the store to get a few things. Do you want me to leave Kenzie or take her with me?"
"Please leave her. I'll take care of her," I take Kenzie out of my aunts arms and rock her in my own.
"Oh, this bag has a few things that they salvaged from the fire." She hands me the bag and walks out of the room. I pull out the few things in the bag, including my iPhone, a locket with a picture of Mom, dad, Kenzie, and me in it, some strange book in a different language that mom use to read, and Kenzie's favorite stuffed animal, a black cat. I had already found my license on the table next to me so at least I have identification. I blow on the stuffed cat to make sure the dust was off of it before handing it to Kenzie's gripping fingers. Holding the power button on my phone, it turns on and within minutes, it vibrates with many texts from my best friend, Piper
Soph where u at. Party 2night, u in? -PiperBaby
Omg I just heard what happened. Hope ur all right -PiperBaby
Gurl txt me when u can, im worried -PiperBaby
Omg Soph. I have bad news for u. Might wanna break it in person. Txt me. -PiperBaby
I text her back

Yesssssss. I'll be there in like 10 mins top -PiperBaby
I look at the two other texts on my phone, from my boyfriend Dan.
Aye babe hope I see you at the party tonight -Dan
Yu dint shw up tnght. Whyyuuu di htis 2 meeeee. Wht the hekkkkk -Dan
Wow I hate when he gets drunk. He always gets super mad and possessive. It's a good thing that I wasn't at that party. I wouldn't have been able to save baby Kenzie. And I'd end up getting close to the same injuries if a guy even looked at me after Dan got drunk. My phone vibrated, taking me out of my thoughts.
What room are u in? -PiperBaby
Umm I think room 42, wing b, floor 3 -xoSophxo
Kk see u soon -PiperBaby
I wait another three minutes before there's a knock on the door, and the tiny brunette that I call my best friend, pokes her head through the crack. I smile and she walks in all the way and closes the door. Her green eyes shine with tears as she throws her arms around me and Kenzie.
"Oh my god! Are you okay? Is Kenz okay?" She exclaims.
"We're both okay. I have to stay another night so they can make sure that this concussion is fine. But other than that, well, I have bad news..." I trail off, looking down.
"I have some bad news too, like I said before. You wanna go first or should I?" Piper asks. Trying to buy some time with having to tell her that I'm moving, I let her go first. "Okay well you know how there was a party last night. I kind of umm walked in on Dan hooking up with Lacey. Like more than making out. They were in one of the bedrooms upstairs. I'm so sorry Soph." The revelation was like a kick in the chest. My eyes started watering a bit but I blinked the tears away. Even after six months together, I wasn't all that shocked he would do this. Hell, when he got angry, he'd hit me so why not cheat.
"Umm. Well that'll make one thing easier I guess. You heard that my parents umm, passed, so me and Kenzie are moving."
"Moving? Where?" Piper asks, with a slight sadness in her voice.
"To Massachusetts. I think she said Salem. Ya know, that sounds familiar. Why would a town in Massachusetts sound familiar? I mean I've always lived here in Cali and have never even been on the east coast."
"Um hello. Salem. As in the Salem Witch trials? We learned about them in history in like eighth grade." Oh so that's why it seemed familiar.
"I'm gonna go live in a town where people believe witches were? That's so lame. Anyways what should I do about Dan?" I ask, changing to the least of the depressing topics.
"You should break up with him, obviously. I mean he treats you like shit and you're moving. Hell he couldn't even keep it in his pants for one night without you. Call him to the hospital, that way he can't get violent. I'll take Kenzie with me and we'll wait behind the curtain just in case."
"Okay sounds good. I'll give him a call," I pick up my phone and press his contact.
"Sophie? What the hell. Why weren't you there last night? Do you know how bad that makes me look? My own girlfriend doesn't want to fucking come to a party with me. Where were you anyways? At another guys house probably. Who's house were you at last night you slut?" Dan demands through the phone, clearly mad that I woke him up from his hangover.
"I was at the hospital Dan. Can you come here so we can talk?" After he reluctantly agreed, and I told him what room, I hung up.
"So in other news. I brought you some pajamas to wear so you don't need this stupid hospital gown" Piper says, handing me a plastic bag. I take the purple flannel pajama pants and black tank top out of the bag and throw it on real fast. Kenzie soon starts to cry and I frantically look around, trying to find a bottle with formula in it. Piper hands me a bottle from a tables across the room and I get to feeding Kenzie.
After a half hour of me feeding and burping Kenzie, I get a text from Dan saying that he's almost here. I hand Kenzie to Piper and she walks over to the other bed in the room, pulls the curtain shut and rocks Kenzie to sleep. The door bursts open and Dan storms in. His brown eyes are dull from his quite obvious hangover, his blond hair was a mess, as if someone had just been running their fingers through it. He still stood tall and frightening, and I couldn't help but flinch back when he spoke in his deep, loud voice.
"What the hell happened Sophie?"
"I'm not quite sure. I was told there was a fire. My- my parents didn't make it and I ended up with a concussion."
"Oh sweetie-" Dan started to say before I interrupt him.
"Don't call me sweetie. I know what you did you cheating pig. We're done and I'm moving," I spat at him. He gripped my upper arms roughly.
"You don't know what you're fucking talking about. We're not done. You'll live with me," Dan menacingly said.
"I do know what I'm talking about and I'm not doing anything with you. Now leave."
"You'll regret this bitch," and with that, he stormed out of the room and out of my life.-----------
