CHAPTER 28

MIA: Hi Maddy, how are you? You haven't picked up your phone and I'm starting to get worried.

MIA: Maddy?

MIA: Okay, I'm getting anxious now. Did you get home? Are you alright? Please tell me you're alright. I tried to help you in school when it happened, I swear, but Aiden wouldn't let me go. I'm sorry okay, I didn't want you to deal with that alone.

MIA: please call me. I love you.

MADDY: I'm fine, Mia, I'm home safe don't worry. I love you.

I look at myself in the mirror.

Hesitantly, I scan my eyes over my figure. Is-is this really a good idea to wear?

I take a deep breath, feeling my hands shake, to steady myself.

I rarely wear stuff like this, stuff that makes me appear different from how I normally like it. And right now I feel extremely different, and I have this distinct urge to rip the dress away from me and hide under my covers. I can see the outline of my figure through the tight dress that hugs me like a second skin.

I've always been the kind of person to drown my body in oversized clothes, mostly because they are comfortable, but definitely because I'm self-conscious enough about my body to want to show it.

And when I stare at myself in the mirror, it's like a new side of me has popped up.

I smooth out the flower-printed material dress, and I'm startled by how much taller I appear in this. The straps are connected behind my neck, leaving my back open.

I hesitate for a second.

Maybe it looks too summery?

The more I stare, the more I can't decide if it is, but among all the dresses I've tried on this afternoon and scattered all over my bedroom floor, I'll agree that this is the best choice of all my clothes.

I look at myself in the mirror once again, tucking a strand of hair behind my ears before nodding to myself.

"Okay. . .okay," I mumble to myself and turn around to pick up my brush. I brush through my hair, wincing once in a while when I brush through some knots.

By the time I'm finished, there's a surprisingly loud sound coming from my window. I jump in fright, dropping my brush in the process.

Oh no, not again.

It sounds like something hit my bedroom window. I don't move a muscle, standing statue still as I glance at the window. What was that?

Suddenly, the window is hit with a thwack sound again, and I start in fright, even though I saw the unmistakable shape of a stone coming toward the window.

My heart speeds up, and I'm suddenly very aware of what's happening.

Someone was hitting my window.

With quiet steps, I walk forward to the window only to come across voices from the outside.

"Watch it, idiot! You're gonna break her window, and you know I'm not paying for that."

"Damn girl, stop pinching my ear!"

I sigh in relief at the familiar voices. My muscles ease, and I walk right up and unlock my window. As I look down, I see the two people I'm expecting from the voices.
