I step out of the car and look up at the new, yet familiar studio entrance. It feels like a lifetime since I last walked through those doors back in New York City. The air is thick with nostalgia and anticipation, my heart racing in sync with the memories flooding back. The days of laughter, tears, and camaraderie on set play out in my mind like an old movie reel.
My heat hammers in my chest as I stand just outside the door, hidden behind a rolling sound cart.
Jeremy squeezes my hand. "Breathe," he murmurs. "You're Evelyn Torres. They're gonna lose their shit."
I whisper back, "You sure they won't faint? Or scream in seven part harmony?"
He grins. "Honestly? Probably both."
As I walk toward the entrance, a flutter of nerves mixes with excitement as my stomach flips. "Ooooh, Lord."
I'm not just returning to the set of the show I once left; I'm returning to the people who became a second family to me. Madison, Lindsay, Bailey, Cheryl, Felicia, and the others have no idea I'm coming back. The producers wanted it to be a surprise and I agreed, thinking it would make the moment more special. Now, I wonder if they're right.
Inside, the familiar buzz of activity surrounds me. Crew members scurry around, setting up lights and cameras, preparing for another day of shooting. I make my way to the wardrobe department, where a few knowing smiles and hushed whispers greet me. They're in on a secret and their excitement is palpable.
I slip into a new wardrobe, feeling a wave of emotions wash over me as I transform back into my character. The fitted blue green sweatshirt, snug navy jeans, a pair of comfortable sneakers, the subtle makeup—it's all so familiar, yet it feels like I'm stepping into a different era of my life. The last time I wore these clothes, I was a different person, struggling with the pressures of the industry and my own personal demons. Now, I feel stronger, more grounded, and ready to face whatever comes next.
As I wait for my cue, I watch the monitor, seeing Madison and Lindsay in character as Constance "Connie" Song and Lorraine Carter. They're filming a scene in Madison's apartment, their chemistry as dynamic as ever. I can't help but smile, remembering our countless hours on and off set together in the East Coast along with Bailey before I left, the way we could make each other laugh with just a look in addition to making fun short videos of us singing, dancing, and fooling around during breaks and behind the scenes.
The director's voice crackles through the headset, giving me the signal. I take a deep breath, steadying myself. This is it. I step onto the set, the soft steps of my sneakers. I approach Madison's apartment door, my heart pounding in my chest. I knock, the sound resonating through the room.
Inside, I hear the characters' voices. "I'll get it," Madison says, her tone curious.
The door opens and there she is. For a split second, her expression is one of polite curiosity, but then recognition dawns and her eyes widen in shock. "Evelyn?" She whispers, almost saying my real name.
