“OW OW OW OW OW HOLY SHIT OW!” you scream, hopping around on one foot. Upon hearing your screaming, Liam looks up just in time to see you slip over on the rocks and fall flat on your butt. He hurries over to where you are sitting on the aglae, worried.
“You OK babe?” he asks, offering you his hand. You shake your head, trying not to cry.
“I-I stood on something, it’s really sore Li-Li” You look up at him waiting for him to say something.
“Hey, it’ll be OK, let’s take a look at that foot OK?” He says, seeing how scared you are. He knows that you don’t like the sight of blood, and to be honest, he doesn’t really want to see your blood either, but for it to be causing you this much pain, he steels himself.
Funny, you can read his thoughts like an open book now, only two months of dating and already you know each other like and old married couple. You laugh inwardly, but let out a gasp as Liam pulls your foot towards him. Squeezing your eyes shut, you wait for the verdict.
“Holy Shit Reina!” Liam says,
“You stood on something!”
“No shit sherlock” you respond. Telling yourself that it’ll be OK, you slowly open your eyes, and glance down to your foot. What you see, almost makes you pass out. Protruding from your foot are several brown spikes.
“Li-Li? Please don’t stress, but I think I stood on a sea urchin, we might like to go to the emergency room, because some of these can be dangerous......” You trail off as Liam leaps into action. He quickly scoops you into his arms, not paying any attention to your protests. You roll your eyes at your boyfriends’ over protectiveness, but cuddle into his chest, wincing every now and again as Liam steps over a piece of driftwood and jarrs your foot.
“Bridget! You have to drive us to the Emergency room, Reina stood on a Sea Urchin!” Liam yells at your friend. Why this had to happen on your first day in New Zealand, you really don’t know.
“Hey Bridget! Your bad luck must be rubbing off on me! I reckon it’s your country!” You quip, trying to keep things light. You watch as she rolls her eyes, and then walks towards you.
“Can I look at your foot?” She asks, having already grabbed it gently. She takes your silence as a yes and then peers at your foot.
“You stood on a kina. They aren’t poisonous, but seeing as daddy direction won’t let me pull the spines out of his precious girlfriends foot, lets go, I’ll take you to A&E” she says, fossicking through her bag for her keys.
“Oi Ni!” She yells at her boyfriend, Niall, who is being taught rugby by her brother.
“I’m taking Reina to A&E, try and kill him before I get back!” laughing she starts walking with you and Liam up the path to the car.
“Nice to see you’re worried about her” Liam says to Bridget sarcastically, as she hums to herself whilst opening the door for you and Liam.
“Oh please! I’ve stood on kina plenty of times before, do you see me dead? I could pull the spines out myself easily” she states, glaring at Liam in the rear-view window. You just stay silent, snuggling into Liam chest, with your foot propped up on the seat next to you. It’s actually quite sore now. You half listen as Bridget and Liam start bickering over whether or not you having Kina spines in your foot is dangerous.
“Hey, um, Bridget?” You interrupt.
“How far away is the A&E?”. Bridget glances at you in her rear-view mirror.
“Well the closest one is in Whakatane, so about an hour, and hour and a half?” She says, a bit worried now.
“Why?” She asks, you can tell she’s not sure whether to be worrying or not now.
“Um I’m just starting to feel a little woozy is all” You say. But as Bridget goes around a particularly sharp corner, you start seeing spots. Whimpering, you lean in closer to Liam, who hugs you close and whispers that you’ll be OK. The last thing you hear before you everything goes black is Liam saying:
“I love you”
