Eliza didn't know why she followed after Cyrus. Maybe she just didn't want another mermaid luring him in again, undoing all of her work from yesterday; so here she was instead, tailing after the hopeless pup in her bat form. Perched atop a branch, she watched, upside down, as he reoriented himself to his new surroundings.
And hopeless he was.
Right now, he was in the middle of a scuffle with a raccoon. So far, the raccoon was winning, a triumphant screech ripping past its teeth while Cyrus slumped over with a whimper.
Originally, once the boy had skipped away from her grasp, back into the wilderness and beyond her domain, Eliza planned to leave things be. The same routine awaited her, as it had the past few centuries already, but then she had to wonder. She pondered over the outcome of his fate, no matter how much she also wanted nothing to do with it. Henry knew she would, which was why he even encouraged her to 'just do it already'.
"I know you're wondering whether he can actually make it out there or not." Henry crossed his arms. "Just be careful while stalking him. Don't let your own boredom for this world bite you in the ass."
She hated how right he was.
Currently, rather than letting the raccoon go to waste, she spurred from the shadows and launched herself in a flash of brown fur. Her fangs latched onto its neck, sinking into a major artery. The raccoon was pinned dead to the grass in a matter of seconds. As she reverted back to her normal form, she further buried her face into its furry neck, draining its life essence.
"Hey!" Cyrus yelped, limping after her in his humanoid form. Less than twenty-four hours had flown by since their previous encounter, but already he had more bruises now than before. "Th-that's not fair! I found it first."
Eliza hummed a curious note in between slurps, then dropped the rest of its now limp carcass onto his feet. She meant it as an offering, assuming that their truce still stood, but he didn't catch it in time.
Cyrus screamed once it touched him, then kicked it away. It sailed past her head.
She looked behind her, then looked back at him. "Uh, the rest was supposed to be for you."
"I don't eat like you do!"
"I know?" She wiped her mouth with the back of her arm. "You could've cooked it over a fire, y'know."
Cyrus pouted. Clearly, the thought didn't occur to him.
"Wanna fetch it?" Eliza added, no pun intended. "It didn't go that far."
Once he finished retrieving her dead catch, she sparked a quick fire in return. It didn't take much, just a pile of dry twigs to start, which she then ignited with some swipes between a flint stone and a pyrite rock that she once stole from Lala's Land. Rock met rock as a flame was born, cradled by her gentle breath. Silence settled over them while they waited for the raccoon to roast over the flames.
