“Strongbow! Strongbow! Your daughter is a great warrior. Look at her dragon. Hold her hands and you shall see it. Why do you deny us Strongbow? We sent her for you and for the tribe. Strongbow! Did she not follow your training well? Did she not make you proud? She did! She did! Accept her! She is yours! Strongbow!” “Tree Wise! You must accept the girl! You will lose your son if you do not. Your traditions must change Tree Wise! It must! It must! She is a great warrior Tree Wise! She will protect your family and your tribe well! Accept her! Did you not accept her when she was a boy? Did she not protect your son? She did! She did! Keep her!”Strongbow and Tree Wise woke up startled. It was morning. Each man was in their huts scared from their dreams, the voices of the gods still ringing in their ears. “I must go find Aukanai’i.” They thought. Strongbow ran out his hut and Tree Wise out of his, to find Aukanai’i and tell her their answer.

Strongbow and Tree Wise ran into each other in front of Mystic’s hut. Tree Wise looked at Strongbow and asked, “You have your answer and I have mine. Let us just hope it is the right one.” Strongbow nodded his head and they called out to Aukanai’i and Raven. “We are in Mystic’s hut!” Raven and Aukanai’i said. Strongbow and Tree Wise walked into the hut and saw Aukanai’i and Raven sitting down with Mystic. “Oracle” They said. “Yes, I am here to hear your answers. Tree Wise you shall go first.” Tree Wise took a big breath then spoke, “I have had a dream where the gods spoke to me. They told me I should accept Aukanai’i because she will protect my family as well as my tribe. Also I have realized that if I could accept Aukanai’i when she was a ‘boy,’ then I should be able to accept her as a girl. Plus she is my son’s soul mate and I cannot deny or stop that. So, Aukanai’i, you are not banished and I am sorry for what I have done and said to you.” Tree Wise hanged his head in shame. Aukanai’i spoke, “I accept your apology. How could I stay mad at my chief?” Tree Wise looked at Aukanai’i and smiled. “Now Strongbow, it is your turn.” Mystic said. “Aukanai’i, my daughter, I am sorry for not believing in you or trusting you after I found out you was a woman. I was proud of you for completing my training well even though I trained you harder. I am ashamed though that I was only proud because you were a boy and you would be like me. Now I have realized that not only men are great in battles, but women too can learn and be as strong as men. They too can protect our tribe and it took my daughter to teach me the way.” Strongbow hugged his daughter tightly and Aukanai’i started to cry. “I accept your apology and I am proud to be your daughter for you have

made me who I am today.” They stood up and hugged one another, and then Tree Wise said, “We must announce you to the tribe, Aukanai’i.” “Ok let us go now.” Aukanai’i said full of pride.

Tree Wise called the whole tribe in front of his hut. “My people, as you know Aukanai’i was one of our men who became a warrior. Well it happens that Aukanai’i is a woman.” The tribe whispered amongst themselves. Tree Wise spoke again, “Yes the gods have sent a woman warrior to teach us a valuable lesson. I have learned that not only men could protect our tribe but women also. This is true! Aukanai’i has hunted for us and protected us. She is a warrior and one of us. She should be treated equally and anyone who does otherwise shall be punished.” The tribe answered, “Ok chief we will! We trust you and accept you, Aukanai’i.”

Many moons later a great war broke out between the Abenaki tribe and a tribe in the west. Aukanai’i e and Raven went into battle and... “Amber come here and watch how my soldiers are trained.” The little girl, Amber, puts down her book next to the tree she was sitting by and runs to her father. “Dad, the book you got me is so cool! I want to be just like Aukanai’i .“ Her father laughs and says, “Sure honey, watch how I train my soldiers and maybe you can learn something.” “Ok daddy.” Amber says as she walks away holding her father’s hand heading towards the army base.
