The early morning air vibrated with devotional songs blaring from distant loudspeakers. Devotees clustered along the riverbank, shawls pulled tight, palms folded, their breath rising in pale clouds against the cold.

From the gathering emerged Siddharth, fully ready - black pants, a crisp white shirt beneath a brown leather jacket

From the gathering emerged Siddharth, fully ready - black pants, a crisp white shirt beneath a brown leather jacket. One hand was shoved deep into his jacket pocket, while the other held his phone to his ear.

"Yeah, Rudraksh, everything alright?" Squinting, he exhaled through pursed lips.

"See in the lower drawer of the kitchen counter."

He nodded absently, teeth chattering. A sudden laugh escaped him. "Yeah, it's very cold."

The smile lingered as he listened to the voice on the other end. Nodding, he swiped the device down, securing it into his pocket.

"Careful, di!"

His head snapped toward the voice. Quietly, he stepped forward, stopping at the edge of the muddy stairs. His gaze dropped to the waterlogged steps before lifting to the two figures below. "What are you two doing there?"

Both sisters froze mid-motion. Then, slowly, they turned around.

Ira's lips curved into a sheepish smile first, her eyes glinting with something far too mischievous to be innocent.

Panchhi followed, her grin already breaking free, clearly enjoying the moment.

"I..." Ira began, fingers twitching vaguely in the air as if searching for the right thought, while her other hand held a long, thin stick firmly against her side. Her head tilted, eyes roaming over him from head to toe. "Do you, advocates, always wear black and white?"

Siddharth's brows shot up. Slowly, he dipped his chin, eyes flicking down to his clothes as if noticing them for the first time, then back to Ira. "Why... is there any problem with that?"

She shrugged, lifting both brows nonchalantly. The corner of her mouth twitched. "Just asking. Anyways..." She waved an airy arc with her free hand. "Do you like lotus?"

A brief pause settled, filled only by the breeze and the gentle lap of water.

"...yes." Siddharth shrugged, uncertainty flickering across his face.

"Perfect," Ira muttered, grinning sideways at Panchhi, who pressed her lips together to suppress a laugh. Looking back at Siddharth, her eyes brightened. "Can you please come here?"

A flicker of confusion crossed his face. He hesitated, then moved anyway, descending the stairs carefully. Mud clung to the edges of each step. He stopped one step above the sisters, close enough to see the river dotted with lotus flowers.
