The doctor stepped out of the labour room, pulling down his mask as his eyes scanned the anxious faces waiting outside. Adheer and Rudra moved toward him instantly.
“How is she?” Adheer asked, the words tumbling out before he could stop them.
“She’s fine… she’s going to be fine, right?” Rudra added, his voice tight with worry.
The doctor smiled reassuringly. “Mrs. Sikand is doing perfectly well. You brought her in just in time.” Then he turned to Adheer. “Mr. Sikand, would you like to join her in the labour room? Your presence might help her.”
Adheer nodded automatically, but the moment the doctor walked away, his confidence faltered. He stood frozen, hands clenched, breath uneven.
Sameer noticed. “What are you waiting for?” he said gently. “Go inside.”
Adheer swallowed. “Dad… she’s already angry with me. She just called this marriage a mistake.” He let out a humourless breath. “Do you really think my presence will help her? Because I highly doubt it.”
“Oh, come on,” Sameer said, waving it off. “Women say all sorts of things in moments like these. It's the pain talking, not the heart.”
Dev chuckled softly. “True. Adriti bit me just a small bite and five minutes later, she was perfectly fine.”
Adheer stared at him, then shifted his gaze to Abeer. Abeer shrugged. “Naina didn’t bite me or shout. We just held hands… and then our doll arrived.”
Rudra, who had been silently listening, stepped forward. He placed a firm hand on Adheer’s shoulder. “Don’t take her words to heart. She’s in unbearable pain. People don’t choose their words in moments like these.”
Adheer looked at him, searching. “Do you really think she didn’t mean what she said?”
Rudra shook his head without hesitation. “Not at all. I know how deeply she loves you. Now go. She needs you.”
That was all Adheer needed. He nodded, changed into the sterilised apron, and followed the nurse inside. The moment the doors closed behind him, a scream echoed through the room raw, strained, full of pain.
“Adheer…” Her voice cut straight through him.
He rushed to her side, immediately taking her hand. It was slick with sweat, trembling beneath his grip. “I’m here, baby. I’m right here.”
Adira turned her head toward him. Her face was flushed, damp curls sticking to her forehead. For a second, relief flickered in her eyes then vanished, replaced by a sharp glare. “You idiot,” she snapped weakly. “Where were you? I was here… waiting for my husband.”
Adheer stiffened, panic flashing across his face. Then he forced himself to stay calm. He bent closer, his voice soft. “I’m sorry, princess. I was just finishing the formalities.”
