~~~Loki's pov~~~
Glass shattering is a very particular sound.
Sharp. Violent. Final.
It does not belong in a home. It certainly did not belong in this home merely a week after a very lovely first wedding anniversary.
My eyes snapped open instantly.
For a fraction of a second, there was silence. Then instinct took over.
Danger.
I turned toward Catherine, already reaching for her shoulder.
"Catherine," I said low and urgent, "there's someone in the house. Grab Linda and hide."
Her eyes widened, but she didn't argue.
She never does when my tone sounds like that.
Good.
I didn't wait.
Magic surged through me, and I teleported downstairs to the base of the staircase.
The air felt wrong.
Like the air before a deviating storm.
And then I saw him.
A man stood near the landing, moving with unsettling calm, as if he belonged there.
He didn't.
My daggers slid into my hands in one smooth motion.
"May I ask," I said coolly, my voice echoing through the room, "what you are doing in my home?"
He turned.
And froze.
Just for a second.
Long enough for me to notice the syringe in his hand.
Glinting.
Threatening.
"Reinstating order," he said.
A gun appeared in his other hand.
He fired.
I moved.
Magic flared as I vanished and reappeared, dodging each shot by inches as bullets tore into walls and furniture behind me. The house—our home—splintered under the assault.
I countered with magic, striking, forcing him back, and then-
Pain.
Blinding, shooting pain.
A bullet grazed me.
I cursed beneath my breath, but didn't falter.
"What's in the syringe?" I demanded.
"Something to permanently neutralize the threat."
"I assume that threat is me."
"Close," he said, almost amused. "But not quite."
Another shot.
This one—
Hit.
It tore into my lung.
Air vanished from my chest in an instant, replaced by fire and pressure and something terrifyingly close to nothingness.
I staggered.
No.
Not now.
"Tell me where the kid is," he said.
The world tilted.
