Preface

I finally said yes after a month of him asking. He wanted me to go out with him. I couldn't believe he wanted me so badly. I was ordinary and plain. There was nothing special about me. But he pursued, so I finally agreed.

He was one of the hottest creatures I had ever seen. He had dark brown curls and bright green eyes. His body was amazing. I couldn't understand how he could go for someone like me, short and pale for someone of color and sad blues eyes with wavy black hair. I mean come on he looked like a god. Like instead of a photographer, he should have been in front of the camera.

I soon figured out secrets that would blow most people's minds, secrets I definitely wasn't expecting. After six months of dating, he came to me with a sad expression. Of course, I thought I was madly in love with him. He told me he couldn't be with me anymore. I begged him why. He finally told me. Come to find out Angel Santibañez was a demon. How ironic, right? I believed him and didn't care, even when he closed his eyes and opened them again to reveal his red ones.

What he didn't know was that my family was involved in that sort of thing. My family was a family of hunters. We killed vampires, demons, werewolves and drained the blood of faeries and mermaids to sale on the hunter market to hunters, witches, and warlocks. I explained all of this to him. I even knew that I shouldn't, but I couldn't help myself. I thought as the love of my life he deserved to know the truth.

Everything was good for another six months. I just knew we were on the verge of something real. I mean I was nineteen and he was twenty-one, but that didn't mean we wouldn't be able to last, right? WRONG! I was completely and utterly wrong.

Chapter 1

"Saphira Marie Graves," he called his accent dripping across the letters of my full name. The graceful yet rough roll of the Rs pulled me the slightest bit closer. "Let me in."

"No, my family is in there and they'll know what you are."

"That's the point, mi pobrecita," he cooed.

"But you'll die."

"No, I won't, but they will. If you know what's good for you then you will let me in."

"So, you're going to kill me," I asked sarcastically even though I was scared out of my wits.

"Actually, yes. I will kill you slowly and brutally without mercy, if you do not let me in." His accent absorbed his words and I wanted to melt, but at the same time it sent fearful shivers down my spine. He stepped closer to me in a menacing way, a dark look coming over his face and his temporarily green eyes blazed red. He was getting irritated. I regretted saying no again. "I have ways to make you say it, so you might as well." I shivered, this time not knowing if it was from pleasure or fear, but either way he smiled. Tears started rolling down my cheeks at the thought of my family being killed.

"Come on, Angel." I was full out bawling at this point. He stepped around me and caressed my face in the process with a malicious smile on his face. Even with my cowardly decision to let him in and let him kill my family. I had to give them some kind of warning.

"Demon in the house," I yelled as loudly as I could, so they, as trained as they were, could get somewhat prepared. Angel pivoted slowly with a look that almost killed me itself. He walked back to me slowly, scaring me more and more with each step. With one swift move, Angel's hand was across my face. I flew into the wall. I had to fight to stay conscious.

My brother, sister, and cousin all came around the corner suited up with multiple guns. Angel looked at them as if they were toys to be played with. To him, they weren't worthy adversaries. My cousin, Larry, was standing tall and proud. He was the first to begin shooting. He actually got a good shot in, but Angel flipped into the air and behind him. He snapped his neck quickly, which I was grateful for. What hurt was that he used Larry as a shield and I could see both my siblings hesitation to shoot through. Angel, still using Larry as a shield, leapt to Anastacia's side. Anastacia was on her game and immediately slashed him with her custom made carbon katana, the twin to my own. That pissed him off extremely. He dropped Larry and as soon as he did my brother, Dylan, started creating his own mayhem. He wasn't going to let his sister go without him, even though that's exactly what I was doing. I started crying even harder, I didn't care anymore. I deserved to die. I saw the worse thing I could ever see in my life. Angel took my sister by her stomach and pulled out her entrails. She wailed loud enough to wake the whole sleeping world, even the dead, and then he threw her close to me. I tried to pull myself toward her, but my body wouldn't let me. She looked back at me and with a small smile she mouthed, "I forgive you." My tears came faster and harder. My heart was breaking and there was nothing I could do about it.

My body curled in on itself and I started seeing black spots in my vision. I tried my best just to stay up long enough to see the outcome of my brother. Dylan was actually holding his own. He'd gotten a few shots and hits in, but he made his mistake before he made the final kill shot, which he had aligned perfectly. He stepped sideways, away from the couch, giving the demon just enough room to leap past Dylan and snap his neck. My brother fell dead, eyes open, looking at me with cold eyes. His face was the last thing I saw before I succumbed to the darkness.
